Alongside the West Branch Susquehanna River

Susquehanna is fittingly named for the river that has shaped its history and identity. The West Branch Susquehanna River borders the Pennsylvania township outside of Williamsport to the north and west. The low-lying plain along the riverfront possesses fertile soil that attracted farmers in the early 1800s, while a stream shooting off the river powered mills in the following years. Today, houses across the street from the river have small docks, some used by homeowners to access the river and others rented out to boaters living elsewhere in Lycoming County. The river also separates Susquehanna from Williamsport, the region’s population hub, keeping the township a sequestered, sparsely populated community.

Living in Nisbet or on a farm

Most people live in Nisbet, an unincorporated village. As Nisbet grew in the ‘50s and ‘60s, the construction of ranch homes and Colonial Revivals turned the farming community into a small suburb. Houses are lined up on either side of the streets, occupying rectangular lots of less than an acre. A few farms still operate on the northwest side of the township. This area is prone to flooding from the West Branch Susquehanna River, but it creates fertile soil for farming. Prices in the township usually fall between $150,000 and $300,000. The CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national score of 4.

River recreation and local wildlife

People can play behind the Susquehanna Township Municipal Building at the playground, baseball field and pair of basketball courts. Several homes on River Road have private boat docks extending into the West Branch Susquehanna River. In the summer, boats cruise up and down the river or stop long enough for anglers to fish for bass, catfish and perch. People can hunt white-tailed deer, gray squirrels and black bears 3 miles east of the township at State Game Lands No. 126, 650 acres of conserved oak and birch forests.

Winters often bring sub-freezing temperatures and 30-plus inches of snow. In South Williamsport, indoor activities include the medieval-themed Treasure Castle Playland and World of Little League Museum, which commemorates the history of the youth baseball league and Williamsport’s status as Little League’s birthplace.

Beers, hoagies and ice cream in Susquehanna

The township’s lone restaurant is The Who’s Inn. Bar stools, tables and pool tables crowd the small tavern, where pizza and burgers are on the menu and patrons’ signatures cover the walls. Across the street, people pump gas and pick up hoagies from the drive-through window at Good to Go gas station. Down the road, Carriage House Creamery scoops ice cream and mixes milkshakes between April and September.

Route 654 leads 2 miles east of Susquehanna to Duboistown, where rock bands jam at The Valley Inn bar, and 2 miles farther to South Williamsport, home to a handful of retail chains such as Save A Lot supermarket, Dollar General and CVS. The closest hospital is UPMC Williamsport, 5 miles from Susquehanna.

Nisbet fire company, church unite for tractor pulls

The organizations responsible for most local events are across the street from each other: Nisbet Volunteer Fire Co. and Nisbet United Methodist Church. The two have worked together to put on tractor pulls; locals competed over two different weekends in 2024 to see who could haul the heaviest sled with their tractors. The fire company also hosts Easter egg hunts, ham dinners and gun raffles.
