Stella offers peace and quiet with routes to all the fun nearby

Jacksonville is home to the Marine base Camp Lejeune, and Swansboro and Emerald Isle fill with summer visitors every year. So when people want to live close to the action but still have room to breathe, they settle in the rustic Stella community, which has areas in Onslow and Carteret Counties. “It's like country living near the beach because it’s 20 minutes from Emerald Isle,” says Nancy Harris, Realtor at Re/Max Ocean Properties, who has over four years of experience in real estate. “It’s kind of out in the middle of nowhere, so when it gets dark, you can see the stars. It’s close enough to Camp Lejeune that some Marines live there and commute to base, but you can also get to the beach, Jacksonville or Morehead.”

Brand-new homes among older Craftsmans and Cape Cods

“Stella was a farming community, and it still somewhat is,” Harris says. “People are selling their land, and developers are buying it and putting in neighborhoods. We need housing out here that’s more affordable. There are more expensive homes closer to the beach, so they’re building three-bedroom homes for young families and retirees. People retire from the Marines and come back here for something they can afford.”

Most homes in Stella have ranch-style or Cape Cod-inspired designs that sell for $280,000 to $430,000. Manufactured homes usually sell for $200,000 or less. Contemporary Craftsman and Colonial Revivals on sprawling lots have sold for about $550,000 to $825,000, but there have also been riverfront homes that have sold for around $1 million. New construction is ongoing here, with brand-new communities like Stella Landing and Stella Bluffs.

Learning in Onslow County or Carteret County

Homes to the west of the river fall in the Onslow County Schools district, while those in the east fall in the Carteret County Schools district. Students in Onslow County attend Swansboro Elementary School, which earns a B-plus from Niche, before moving on to Swansboro Middle, also earning a B-plus. The B-rated Swansboro High School is ranked as the third-best high school in the county by Niche. Carteret County has White Oak Elementary School, which receives an A-minus and feeds into the A-rated Broad Creek Middle. Croatan High School also has an A-minus, and Niche ranks the school as the best public high school in the county. Kids will likely have long bus rides to either school district.

Kayaking down White Oak River

Stella is less than 20 minutes from Swansboro Municipal Park, which has a playground, soccer fields and the Swansboro Recreation Center next door. The Boondocks Landing on Stella Road runs on an honor system, so anyone who wants to launch their boats or kayaks onto White Oak River should put $5 in the box near the ramp. Anglers might reel in bass from the deep water. For even more fun along the water, Emerald Isle has miles of sandy shoreline, Emerald Isle Woods Park and the Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier.

Grabbing groceries and dining out in Swansboro or Cape Carteret

Some residents pick up groceries at the Walmart Supercenter in Swansboro, while others drive down to Lowes Foods in Cape Carteret. Harris mentions how locals love Angie’s Lighthouse Cafe and The Fuzzy Peach Frozen Yogurt Bar in Cape Carteret. Swansboro has fast food chains along Highway 24. Still, the stand-out restaurants are often locally owned, like Bamboo Asian House, which has been family-owned for over 20 years. Closer to home, the T&W Restaurant and Oyster Bar in Peletier is a popular dinner spot when residents want a night out or need a place to eat when driving back from Emerald Isle. Swansboro also features small businesses along Front Street, including the Salt Marsh Cottage gift shop and Cameo Boutique clothing store.

Celebrating the mullet in Swansboro

When residents want to join community events, they might visit Swansboro for the Annual Mullet Festival of North Carolina, where the town celebrates the small fish that sustained fishermen who lived in the area during the late 1800s. The over 70-year tradition always features live music, craft vendors and fish fry events where visitors can try mullet.

Commuting to Camp Lejeune or Jacksonville

Residents heading to Emerald Isle drive about 15 miles south on State Highway 58 for about 30 minutes. To reach downtown Jacksonville, drivers can use Highway 24 or Old 30 Road, but both paths flow about 20 miles east for a 30-minute trip. Camp Lejeune is farther southwest, around 30 miles or a nearly 45-minute drive. Swansboro and Cape Carteret have urgent care and primary care centers, but the nearest hospital is Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is less than an hour from Stella, offering flights to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Most places of worship are churches lining Highway 58, like Stella Church of God.

Low crime rates and hurricane risks

Stella is a quiet area with a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. Summers are often hot and humid, though that heat is often broken by rain during hurricane season. The White Oak River poses a flood risk for properties along the water, and some roads may fill with standing water. County flood maps and planning departments can shed more light on insurance for homeowners.
