Swepsonville offers small-town living near the Haw River in Alamance County

Newly platted subdivisions branch off country roads in the town of Swepsonville, a small community of about 2,500 people in Alamance County. Located along the Haw River, it features small-town living within a 30-minute drive of larger cities like Greensboro, Durham and Burlington, though it's also home to a 650,000-square-foot Honda manufacturing plant. Swepsonville's housing prices are generally lower than those in neighboring Orange County. “It’s for people wanting to be in the country but close enough to a big city and still needing to afford their home,” says Eric Burns, a local broker at Coldwell Banker HPW. He explains that here, homebuyers can find three-bedroom homes in the low $300,000s: “You can’t do that in Mebane, Hillsborough, Carrboro and certainly not Chapel Hill."

The city of Swepsonville is a quiet place nestled along the scenic Haw River, offering a peaceful retreat with a strong sense of community.

Recreation along the Haw River and at Graham Regional Park

The Haw River goes through town, and Swepsonville River Park is the closest access point for residents. “My kids jump from rock to rock and go fishing, and you can canoe down it,” Burns says. Paths also run along the banks of the river, offering relaxing views of the water.
Just northeast of Swepsonville, Graham Regional Park includes an accessible playground, a zipline, climbing rocks and a paved walking trail. Swepsonville Ballpark has a baseball field on the southern side of town. It was originally constructed in 1926, and the town has solicited ideas for revamping the facility.

A converted mill in Saxapahaw has restaurants and events

Swepsonville has a Dollar General, and Food Lion is about 3 miles away. About a 10-minute drive south, in Saxapahaw, a recently converted mill building overlooking the Haw River now houses restaurants and high-end condos. Here, the Saxapahaw General Store has locally made food items and household goods. The store also serves made-to-order burgers, pizza and sandwiches. “It is really good food,” Burns says. “In the spring, summer and fall, people will eat out on the patio or walk it down to eat by the river.” Other businesses at this trendy development include the Left Bank Butchery, Cup 22 Coffee House and Haw River Farmhouse Ales, a brewery serving made-in-house craft beers.

The former mill also hosts free summer concerts at the Haw River Ballroom. The festivities include a farmers market, artisan vendors, food trucks and kids’ activities overlooking the river. “They’ve had slip and slides going down the grassy hill and a bubble-making station next to the live music,” Burns says.
