A quieter Syracuse neighborhood close to city events and recreation
Pressed along the outskirts of Syracuse’s city center, Far Westside is an outlying neighborhood that provides a more peaceful, suburban-like setting compared to other Syracuse neighborhoods. However, the proximity to the attractions around Onondaga Lake and the vibrancy of Downtown Syracuse allow residents to stay active in the city’s goings-on, from recreation to arts and events. Rows of vernacular-style homes line the residential streets here, creating a family-friendly atmosphere. Additionally, being the northwesternmost neighborhood in Syracuse, Far Westside places its residents close to important highways like Interstate 690, which helps them stay in touch with neighboring communities.
Housing mix includes bungalows, folk styles and investment options
Homes sit clustered together along sidewalk-framed streets, offering a quieter feel away from the bustle of Downtown Syracuse. Folk-style single-family homes and cottages are most common here, many with Colonial influences and details like colorful vinyl siding and small front porches. Cottages and bungalows add variety to the housing mix. A few houses have been converted into apartments, and multi-family buildings that periodically come up for sale provide investment opportunities for buyers. Typically, prices range from $65,000 to $310,000. Fixer-uppers may be lower than $65,000.
Education within the Syracuse City School District
Kids in Far Westside may attend schools within the Syracuse City School District, which receives a C-plus overall rating from Niche. Students may begin at Porter Elementary School before advancing to Syracuse STEM at Blodgett for sixth through eighth grades. Both schools get C-minus grades. Public Service Leadership Academy at Fowler is a high school that offers a concentrated career and technical education to provide specialized experiences for students, preparing them for life after graduation. Students may also attend OnTECH Charter School, which also focuses on project-based learning for career and technical education. Both high schools earn C-plus scores. Far Westside is also close to many of the city’s post-secondary educational institutions, including Syracuse University, Onondaga Community College and more.
Lakeside trails, parks and the Rosamond Gifford Zoo
Far Westside’s proximity to Onondaga Lake puts residents close to lakeside trails for hiking, including the West Shore Trail extension and Empire State Trail. Here, the West Shore Trail Fishing Pier can be accessed for reeling in carp and black bass. Lewis Park, centrally located in Far Westside, offers athletic fields and a playground. Far Westside is also north of Burnet Park, a popular Syracuse park that provides open spaces, one of two city-owned golf courses, a pool and a playground. It’s also home to the 43-acre Rosamond Gifford Zoo, which features an Asian elephant preserve, as well as exotic animals such as penguins, tigers and more. The zoo also hosts a number of unique events, including Brew at the Zoo, Yoga with Penguins and Canine Championships dog shows.
Local cafés and Polish sweets add flavor to quiet streets
Establishments are sparsely peppered throughout the residential streets, offering homey atmospheres and neighborly vibes. Eateries reflect the diversity of the community, with favorites including Cathy’s Corner Café and Eva’s European Sweets, which serves Polish delicacies like homemade pierogies and desserts. Twin Trees Restaurant, and its sister location Twin Trees Too, beckon diners with their classic Italian fare like specialty pizzas and pasta dishes. Westvale Plaza on Genesee Street is a shopping strip with diverse, casual eateries and shops like Thrifty Shopper and European Specialties, a gourmet grocery store. The Fairmount Fair shopping mall further down the street houses a Wegman’s for groceries and a handful of national retailers like Target, Marshall’s and more.
Fairgrounds and amphitheater offer year-round entertainment
Far Westside is less than 3 miles from the New York State Fairgrounds, a major destination in the area known for its wide variety of events year-round. The 375-acre fairgrounds feature multiple venues, which host horse shows, 4-H youth shows and more. For 13 days in August through Labor Day Weekend, the fairgrounds attract visitors across the state for The Great New York State Fair, a celebration consisting of food, exhibits and entertainment that spans musical performances to carnival rides. “The fair brings millions of people,” Harrington says, adding that it’s one of the city’s major events, year after year.
Tucked behind the fairgrounds farther down the lake is the Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview, an open-air concert venue. “The Amphitheater is beautiful,” Harrington says. “It has amazing concerts and is a nice venue that brings in really big people like Chris Stapleton.” She says that because the venue sits back on the lake, boaters can participate in the fun as well. “There’s docking on the other side, so people who have boats can just bring them up to the dock and listen to the concerts,” she says. “And sometimes they have fireworks, too.”
Most residents drive, but transit links are still accessible
Far Westside offers proximity to Interstate 690, which links to Downtown Syracuse with connections to Interstates 81 and 90. While Far Westside residents mostly rely on personal cars for transportation, Syracuse offers plenty of public transit for commuters, including bus stops scattered along Genesee Street that provide connections to downtown and beyond. The Syracuse–New York State Fair train station is about 3 miles away and is served by Amtrak.
