Lincoln Hill

Lincoln Hill is a quiet Syracuse suburb near downtown

Two miles northeast of Downtown Syracuse , Lincoln Hills offers suburban living without sacrificing the perks of city life. "It's pretty much all residential," says Zachary Johnson, an associate broker with Acropolis Realty Group with over 7 years of experience. Lincoln Park is the neighborhood green space, and a handful of locally owned businesses are dotted throughout the community. "It's really easy to get around," Johnson says. "You have lower home prices and good proximity to hospitals and colleges." The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 7 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. Neighbors can join the Neighborhood Watch Groups of Syracuse to help deter crime in the area.

Multifamily housing and Victorian-inspired gems

Lincoln Hill offers quiet, residential streets lined with sidewalks, lawns and a mix of single- and multifamily homes. "They're going to be somewhat older homes, which is the nature of buying in the city," Johnson says. Most homes here were built throughout the 20th century; architectural styles are diverse, but Colonial, Craftsman or Victorian-inspired features are typical. Front porches are common, and many homes have uncovered driveways. Certain Victorian-inspired homes stand out with ornate details like decorative gables and elegant bay windows.
Roughly 70% of residents are renters, and a handful of fixer-uppers are available, making the neighborhood popular with property investors. Prices range from about $50,000 to $500,000, depending on a home's size, features and renovation needs.

Neighborhood markets and downtown dining

Lincoln Hill is primarily residential with a handful of businesses. "There are a ton of small corner stores where you can get the majority of items, but you're not going to have full grocery stores," Johnson says. Dominick's Market is an old-school grocer with pantry essentials, produce and fresh meats, including oxtail and Italian sausages. Hawley Market has ice cream scoops and fast-casual bites, like breakfast sandwiches and mozzarella sticks. McNeilly's Pub is the neighborhood watering hole and pool hall — a popular spot to watch the game, throw darts or play a round of Galaga with beer on tap. For more shopping and dining needs, downtown has dozens of bars, cafes and restaurants. Funk n' Waffles is a casual spot for coffee and gourmet waffles with live music, while family-run Abbiocco by A Mano is a date-night favorite serving Italian specialties like orange-chocolate cannolis, veal chop parmigiana and housemade gnocchi.

Swim and play at Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park is the neighborhood's centerpiece, offering 19 acres of green space to enjoy, including a playground, a community pool and courts for basketball and tennis. "You can walk your dog there," Johnson says. A few other parks are nearby, including pocket-sized Highland Park with a playground and blacktop, and Sunnycrest Park with an ice skating rink, a 9-hole golf course and fields for baseball, soccer and more. About 7 miles away, Onondaga Lake Park is popular for everything from archery and boating to skateboarding and volleyball. Anglers can cast lines in the lake for largemouth bass and common carp, while birders may spot redheads and white-winged scoters.

Walk, drive and ride the bus in Syracuse

Interstate 690 borders Lincoln Hill, granting easy access downtown. Streets are pedestrian-friendly and lined with sidewalks and Centro bus stops. "[The area's] super walkable," Johnson says. SUNY Upstate Medical University is 2 miles away, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport is an 8-mile drive. "You're about 5 minutes from Upstate Hospital," Johnson says.

Academic opportunities at Henninger High

Lincoln Hill is part of the Syracuse City School District, which Niche rates a C-plus overall. Kids may start at Dr. Weeks Elementary before moving to Lincoln Middle — both rated C-minus. At the C-plus-rated Henninger High, teens can explore the health field in career and technical education courses, like laboratory science and medical assistance. Students may also take dual-enrollment courses for credit at Onondaga Community College. About a mile away, Syracuse University's top areas of study include communications, social services and visual and performing arts.

Butter and potatoes at the New York State Fair

The New York State Fair, dating to 1841, is the oldest state fair in America and one of the most popular, with over 1 million annual visitors. Six miles away at the New York State Fairgrounds, the August celebration includes carnival rides, hundreds of live performances and fun traditions like butter sculptures and the $1 potato booth. Syracuse is also a sports town. On game days, fans dress in orange and head to the JMA Wireless Dome, 3 miles away, to support the Syracuse Orange.
