Northwestern-style homes sold for below market prices
While Modern Craftsman houses are the dominant style, Hilltop is also home to turn-of-the-century brick houses and a few newly built modern houses. Sidewalks line either side of the street, and the proximity of residential and commercial blocks make this neighborhood highly walkable. Most properties are sold in a price range of $350,000 to $600,000. The median price of $420,000 is below the Tacoma market average, earning Hilltop’s reputation as an affordable neighborhood.Edna Travis Park and garden
Edna Travis Park, formerly known as McCarver Park, is located in the southeastern corner of the neighborhood. The park is home to the Zina Linnik Playground, named in honor of a fallen student. The playground has a tetherball court and a reading circle area. The park also features a popular paved walking loop and a well-kept community garden. There are a total of seven different public parks in Hilltop, most of which are small grassy lots built into the end caps of residential blocks. Sheridan Park is an example of this and features a modest playground and picnic area.Access to a top-rated high school
Students living in Hilltop will attend the Tacoma Public School District, starting with Stanley Elementary School. The school is located near the western edge of the neighborhood and earns a B-plus on Niche. Stanley also offers before and after-school care through the local Boys and Girls Club chapter. Hilltop Heritage Middle School was previously named Jason Lee Middle School and earns a C rating on Niche. Heritage partners with the Peace Community Center for its Hilltop Scholars program. Students have access to daily tutors and are assigned a weekly academic coach and monthly learning-based field trips to help support their success. Stadium High School is ranked as the seventh best public high school in Pierce County with a score of A-minus from Niche. Students can participate in over two-dozen student body clubs, including the culinary arts club, media club and creative writing club.New businesses and neighborhood mainstays
MLK Jr. Way is the neighborhood's central hub of entertainment, retail and dining. Manifesto Coffee is a micro-roastery and locally owned coffee shop. Known for its small-batch, hand-roasted coffee, the cafe also partners with local bakeries to provide breakfast pastries. The Zodiac Supper Club is a newcomer to the area. This quirky, eclectic spot is known for it’s shrine of David Bowie and art deco oil lamps. Customers can enjoy creative handcrafted cocktails while grilling their own steak or burger tableside. There are also plenty of established neighborhood offerings, like Quickie Too, the first vegan restaurant in Tacoma. Even though it's been open for nearly 30 years, dinner rush still brings a line that stretches out the door. Regarding Quickie Too, a local resident remarked, “I need it. Give it to me, give it to me now!” Johnson Candy Company is another beloved Hilltop staple. Open since 1925, this family-owned candy shop specializes in handmade candies, chocolates and confections.
