Life near Florida A&M University
Located just minutes southwest of downtown Tallahassee is the sprawling campus of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, also known as Florida A&M University or FAMU. Founded in 1887, Florida A&M is a highly ranked, historically Black university with over 10,000 students. The surrounding FAMU neighborhood consists of two primary residential areas, that although are very different, were shaped by their proximity to the college. To the east is the F.A.M.U/South Bronough area that caters mostly to students. Residents here are in a walkable area close to the college as well as shopping, entertainment and dining. There are also a few entertainment options in the neighborhood, including a brewery and live music venue. To the west and south is the Greater Bond neighborhood. This is a prominent, historically Black community that is sometimes referred to as the heart and soul of Tallahassee’s Southside. "There is a lot of history associated with the area,” says Casie Moran, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Hartung who is a Tallahassee native. “It’s close to downtown, which attracts people, but it’s still probably our most affordable area of Tallahassee.” Here residents will find community centers, schools, a park, and several churches, in addition to some local businesses. Despite their different characters, both neighborhoods enjoy the many events and activities offered on the campus. From thrilling college football games to student theater productions to musical performances, there is always something to do.
Multifamily and singly family housing can be found throughout the FAMU area.

When residents are craving some culture, the Railroad Arts District is just to the north of FAMU. This eclectic area includes funky shops, breweries and eateries. “There are traditional options and some newer ones like Proof Brewery,” says Moran. “Railroad Square has made the area trendier since it's kind of where FAMU and Florida State University populations meet.” Proof Brewery has an extensive beer and cocktail menu, along with games like ping pong and cornhole. Locals can also head to The Iron Daisy for Mexican cuisine or The Bark for vegan food and unique cocktails. For everyday essentials, people can head to the Piggly Wiggly in the Southside Shopping Plaza on Monroe Street, which also has a Family Dollar, AutoZone and a beauty supply store.

Making up the neighborhood’s west boundary, Junction Park features a 3.5-mile stretch of the St. Mark’s Trail, part of Florida’s first rail trail. This wide, paved pathway travels another 20 miles from Tallahassee to the Gulf of Mexico.
