Historic Black neighborhood in Tallahassee
Frenchtown is the oldest and most prominent historically Black neighborhood in Florida. Designated as a neighborhood for freed slaves during Reconstruction, this small neighborhood north of Florida State University was a thriving area in the early 20th century, with grocery stores and local businesses. But things declined between the 1970s and 1990s, and now Frenchtown is straddling the line between historic preservation and gentrification. Century-old homes with longtime tenants sit across from new FSU student housing. People pick up prescriptions at the local drugstore, a staple in town since the 1950s. Frenchtown has no grocery store, but it does have three restaurants and a farmer’s market seeking to regain its footing after dealing with nearby construction for about a year.

Most residents in Frenchtown rent their homes, and residential construction happened in the mid-to-late 20th century. Some houses have paved driveways, while others have dirt or no driveway. On Dunn Street, a mobile home with a chain link fence sits right next to the neighborhood Deliverance Temple.
