Lake Ella
Restaurants and shops are a short walk away in Midtown
Most homes are just a block or two from shops and eateries at Lake Ella. “The cottages at Lake Ella have been around 100 years, and they’re now locally owned businesses,” says Barbara McGarrah, the founder of Barb’s Brittles, a confectionery and ice cream shop in one of the historic cottages. These stone buildings were originally part of a motor court with roots dating to the late 1920s. The neighborhood is also an easy walk from a bustling corridor of shops and restaurants. “The homes here are lovely, but people really come here because there’s so much activity nearby,” says Patty. Outdoor dining is popular, and locals chat over java at Lucky Goat Coffee Company and share craft brews and specialty cocktails at Liberty Bar & Restaurant. Table 23, a 1920s house converted into a restaurant, has a spacious porch where diners enjoy modern southern fare under shady live oaks. For groceries, Publix and Whole Foods are within walking distance.
StarMetro buses stop at numerous places in Midtown
The neighborhood is pedestrian friendly, but it’s easy to travel to various points around the city by catching a StarMetro bus at multiple stops in Midtown. Tallahassee International Airport is 9 miles away.Tallahassee celebrates spring over the course of a weekend
Springtime Tallahassee is a weekend festival in late March that celebrates the city. The event begins with a music festival followed by Jubilee in the Park, an all-day event with local food vendors, artists and live music performances at the nearby Downtown Chain of Parks. All of these events lead up to the Grand Parade, one of the largest parades in the Southeast. Spectators fill the streets to see more than 100 brightly decorated floats and high-stepping marching bands trumpeting through the city. The park at Lake Ella has a walking trail and cottage shops
A paved trail loops around Lake Ella for almost one mile, passing benches and resident ducks. Flanked by a gazebo, mossy live oaks and abundant greenery, it's a pretty place to stroll. “People love to exercise, to bring families out to feed the ducks and patronize the cottages,” says McGarrah. “It’s a wonderful place to come out and relax.” It's also a good place to sample a new ice cream flavor – McGarrah’s chocolate sunflower brittle ice cream was named the best ice cream in Florida by the Food Network in 2021. With its lush grassy spaces under the shade of even more large live oaks, Los Robles Park is another pleasant place to unwind.Cottages, Colonial Revivals and historic mansions populate this walkable neighborhood
Swaying palms, shady live oaks and lush lawns hug Lake Ella’s highly walkable streets, giving the community a laid-back atmosphere. “Prices have risen with the location's popularity, but homes can be found for a wide range of budgets,” says Patty. Newer two-bedroom duplexes start at $255,000, but single-family homes can start at $300,000, including a three-bedroom cottage with a large hedge-lined lawn. Homebuyers can also find a two-bedroom Colonial Revival with a two-story porch and a trellis-covered patio. Historic mansions are on the higher end of the price range, like a million-dollar six-bedroom Tudor estate with a wrap-around driveway and fine carpentry details. Other million-dollar historic mansions with Victorian or Southern Colonial architecture add to the historic Tallahassee aesthetic.Leon High School receives an A grade from Niche
Students in the neighborhood are only a mile from elementary, middle and high schools that are a part of the highly touted Leon County Schools, given an A-minus by Niche. Some neighborhood students will enroll at Ruediger Elementary, graded a C-plus, and continue at Augusta Raa Middle School, rated a B. They round out their academic journey at the outstanding Leon High School, which receives an A. Florida State University football may own Saturdays in Tallahassee, but on Fall Fridays, the community comes out to cheer the Leon Lions.
