Waterside tranquility in Leon County
For lakeside serenity within reach of the Florida state capital, the communities surrounding Lake Iamonia are a natural fit. Locals enjoy immediate access to fishing and boating on the 5,700-acre lake, and the forest is a pleasant backdrop. "The best thing about living around Lake Iamonia is having a quiet, rural home where no one is in your business, but you still have shopping and restaurants close by, and you can reach downtown Tallahassee in around 20 miles,” says resident Ruth Cole, owner of the Cottage Garden Consultant, a local gardening business. “You can live in a very natural setting but not be isolated. You'll see lots of front porches here for visiting, and in the morning, you might wake up and see deer with their fawn looking at you from the yard, as if they're curious why you're here."

Vast waters and Van Brunt landing
Recreational activities on Lake Iamonia include fishing, kayaking and wildlife watching – but not swimming thanks to the many alligators. Anglers cast for bluegill and largemouth bass in the lake while wildlife enthusiasts scan for bobcats, foxes and river otters. Many homes have their own private piers, making it easy to spend a day out on the water. The Van Brunt public boat landing at Kate Ireland Park is a popular place to launch onto the lake. The park also has a playground. There are not any notable hiking trails in the region, and the recreational focus is watersports. A striking monument to veterans is located on the shore of the lake.
Van Brunt Landing on Lake Iamonia is a cool spot to put in and spend an evening fishing.

New and custom country homes
A variety of modest brick ranch homes and cozy colonials with dormers sit amid soaring pine trees while larger colonial styles with grand covered porches overlook sizable grass lawns. Contemporary Spanish-style stucco homes add to the unique architectural blend, which includes A-frames in the forest and contemporary cottages. Elsewhere, custom mansions on one acre or more are available, nestled in a buffer of trees. Cole adds, "There are two nice, gated communities along Meridian Road, and they're building more. We're in a subdivision with maybe 30 owners, with lots sizes from 2.5 acres on up. And in our development, you'll see everything from traditional to modular to mobile. It's pretty much anything you want, where you can commune with nature." Pricing across the area ranges from $197,000 for a three-bedroom wooden cottage on the Ochlokonee River to around $875,000 for brand-new builds with Craftsman features.

Residents can easily access plazas and restaurants via Fairbanks Ferry Road and North Meridian Road. "Fish Camp right on the lake is a great date night spot. They have live music and great appetizers and cocktails,” says Cole. "You can dance the night away and then go home and not hear a sound." There's a Walmart Supercenter about 15 miles south of Lake Iamonia and a Costco a few miles further. A new Publix anchors the recently constructed Shops at Bannerman Village Plaza, making grocery runs easy. "Plans are underway to build out the area around Publix even more, including 175 new units and a Bass Pro Shop. So, property values could substantially rise,” says Cole. “It's a great time to invest here."
