Northwest Tallahassee blends nature with quiet living

Wrapping around Lake Jackson’s northwest shoreline, the subdivisions of Northwest Tallahassee offer tons of green space and seclusion away from the bustle of downtown, all with easy access to the great outdoors.

Brick ranch homes and Craftsman builds on wooded lots

The majority of Northwest Tallahassee’s residential streets are located directly west and south of Lake Jackson and concentrated to a handful of subdivisions. Here, you’ll find mostly brick ranch-style homes — some with siding — and Minimal Traditional homes on mid-sized lawns accented with pluming live oaks and towering loblollies, as well as traditional brick homes. You’ll also find Millennial models and newer construction with Craftsman features, such as gabled dormers and exposed wood beams. Most homes range from $240,000 to $600,000 — although homes with smaller floor plans can start around $160,000.

Public schools offer AP courses and magnet academies

School-age children can attend Canopy Oaks Elementary — with a B+ rating on Niche — and Raa Middle School, while older students can attend A-rated Leon High School. Recognized as Florida’s oldest continually accredited high school, Leon High offers more than 25 Advanced Placement courses in fields such as computer science, physics, Latin and music theory. The high school boasts a robust performing arts program that features chorus, orchestra and theatre. Older students can also attend Godby High School and enroll in one the school’s many Magnet programs and unique academies, including welding and nursing programs, and the Academies of Agriculture, Aviation and Information Technology.

Parks offer playgrounds, trails, birding and lake access

Take the kids to Tower Road Park to climb on the colorful playground and catch some air on the swing sets. The park features a lighted multipurpose field for more spread out play or just running around to get the willies out. At 26-acre J. Lee Vause Park, kids can burn some energy at the large play area, featuring recently improved equipment that includes an expressive play area with musical instruments and a flying saucer swing. There are a total of two playgrounds, including one for smaller kids. The park also boasts a gated and shaded dog park, so four-legged friends can burn off extra energy too. Excellent for birders and hikers, the surrounding wooded area features a paved walking trail and boardwalk with a view of Lake Jackson and attracts warblers and tanagers and osprey and herons and chickadees and red-tailed hawks.

Northwest Tallahassee hugs the northern shoreline of Lake Jackson, a prairie lake known for its largemouth bass fishery. Head to nearby Sunset Landing to launch a boat or canoe into the water. Flower lovers will bloom with joy during late summer when the American lotuses unfurl yellowish-white petals, carpeting the water’s surface with a floral sheen. After a day on the water, head to Shucker’s Oyster Bar for some local flavor and to slurp up oysters and fried catfish. This cozy dive is a local favorite, serving up hospitality alongside breezy views of Lake Jackson.

Dining and shopping options line Highway 27 near Oak Valley

There are plenty of dining and shopping options along U.S. Highway 27, national fast-food chains and familiar chain restaurants, plus Walmart for everyday essentials. Centrally located Publix at the Oak Valley shopping center makes checking items off your weekly grocery list quick and easy. For dining, head to Tour of Italy, family-owned and serving authentic Italian cuisine and making guests feels like family for over 15 years. Swing by for dinner in the dining room or take it easy on the patio garden with a glass of Chianti.
