East Tampa has a suburban feel and easy access to the city center
East Tampa, resting only about 5 miles from downtown Tampa, offers a quiet suburban environment populated with schools and small natural getaways. The amenities are modest, and the commercial impact is small, allowing residents to indulge in calm suburbia and uplift local businesses.
Single-story homes and multi-family living
Single stories occupy most of East Tampa’s streets. Most of the houses are modest cottages or bungalows. Colorful paints decorate some, and detailed iron-wrought fences decorate others. Ranches offer a patterned brick exterior. A few apartments complexes and a mobile-home parks cater to multi-family living.
Public schools and a girls academy serve the neighborhood
Hillsborough County elementary, middle and high schools disperse throughout the neighborhood. Ferrell Girls Preparatory Academy offers specialized classes like Introduction to Law and Computer and Business Technology and stands by the motto, “every girl, every day, college-bound.”
Fair Oaks Park offers sports and a community center
After school, local youth and residents can play basketball or visit the playground at Fair Oaks Park. Situated near the center of the neighborhood, the park’s community center provides kids with computer lab access and hosts a variety of events for the entire community to enjoy. For anyone with a patient eye, Clarence Fort Freedom Trail is a popular waterfront spot for bird watchers. Boardwalk trails and a paved paths provide accessible routes for residents the enjoy the small, swampy lake.
Familiar Southern flavors at local restaurants
Humble hole-in-the-wall restaurants pepper the neighborhood. Residents can order a heavy Southern plate from M & R Café or head less than a mile North for take-out tacos. Surprisingly enough, Ice Cream’s does not serve ice cream. This food truck dishes out lathered turkey legs paired with soul-healing sides like mac and cheese and sweet potato pie. For a more traditional commercial experience, Eastgate Shopping Mall sits on the North border. This center features a few chain restaurants and clothing stores. From there, residents can hop on East Hillsborough Avenue for a continued list of familiar options like KFC, Subway and Little Caesars. Dispersed throughout the neighborhood, a variety of small grocery stores provide residents with everyday needs. Residents can visit Fish Market or Sanwa Farmer’s Market to get fresh produce from a family-owned storefront.
