Palmetto Beach
Modest bungalows with character
Most of the housing in Palmetto Beach are bungalows built between the 1920s and 1950s. Homebuyers and investors can find a roughly 1,000-square-foot bungalow for anywhere between $190,000 and $400,000. These properties tend to be painted in bright colors like blues and greens, have large front porches and either come with a carport or driveway. “For people who like older homes, this area is just great, since they tend to have a lot of character and have a very quintessential classic Florida kind of vibe,” Meyer says. There are also uniform townhouses in the neighborhood with Spanish-influenced architecture that go for roughly $400,000. Meyer continues, “We’re close to the water but affordable compared to nearby areas like Seminole Heights.”Traveling around Palmetto Beach and Tampa
Selmon Expressway follows the neighborhood’s northern border and can take drivers up to the Tampa area; however, commuters should be aware that it is a toll road. U.S. State Route 41 follows the western border and can take commuters all up and down Florida – 41 also connects to Interstate 4 in Ybor City. Although train tracks cross through the neighborhood, residents must travel 2 miles into Downtown Tampa to access the Tampa Union Station and hop on. For out-of-state travel, Tampa International Airport is about 8 miles away.Breakfast bites in Palmetto Beach
Despite its primarily residential landscape, the neighborhood has plenty of dining options. Locals pick up a cup of morning fuel at 22nd Street Coffee, which first opened in the back of an old bakery in Ybor in 1968 and later relocated to Palmetto Beach. The family owned Igmara’s Caribbean Cafe and Coco’s Sandwich Shop both serve authentic Latin cuisine for breakfast and lunch. There are several grocery stores in the neighborhood for those who like to cook at home, including Tienda Mexicana and Los Amigos Grocery and Meat. La Fiesta Mexican Store has groceries as well, along with a hot food and drink menu serving specialty tacos and quesadillas. For daily necessities, there’s an IKEA on North 26th Street that sells furniture, electronics and household items. If shoppers need more options, they can head a little over 1 mile north to Ybor or 2 miles west into Downtown Tampa.Outdoor recreation along McKay Bay
Palmetto Beach is home to several green spaces. Desoto Park boasts a nature trail, swimming pool, multiple sports courts, a community center and a playground area. Visitors can practice their skills at the skate park or sign up for a summer camp with the park center. “It’s one of the best parks in the entire city, right on the water,” Meyer says. Locals often use the grills in the picnic area by the pier to fry up their latest catches. Another popular option is McKay Bay Nature Park. Visitors can observe all kinds of wildlife at its national avian sanctuary by following the boardwalk through mudflats and mangroves.Hillsborough County schools enrich student skills
Families living in the area can send their children to Hillsborough County Public Schools for their education. Desoto Elementary School has a B-minus grade on Niche and offers an after-school enrichment program with the Tampa Bay Boys and Girls Clubs. Giunta Middle School has a C Niche grade but makes up for it with career-centered electives like culinary arts and business technology. From there, students can attend Howard W Blake High School, which has a B Niche grade. Ranked No. 7 in Best High Schools for the Arts in Florida, Blake is known for its performing and visual arts magnet program.Impact of nearby industrial sites
Palmetto Beach is located along the northern tip of a peninsula – closest to the mainland. At the end of the peninsula are several large industrial and manufacturing sites for oil and steel, plus a wastewater treatment plant. While many Palmetto Beach residents are employed by these sites, they may also deal with lower air quality from pollution and the metallic smell that comes with it.
