A part of local history
Port Tampa City, a residential neighborhood nestled between Tampa Bay and MacDill Air Force Base, is defined by a history that remains alive today. Located in the southwest corner of Tampa, the community was founded in 1885 by Henry Plant, best known for connecting Tampa Bay to the national rail system. Port Tampa City was the end of Plant’s railroad line. He built two hotels for passengers and the result was an explosion of population and economic growth. Port Tampa City’s port continues to be operational, though, serving as the primary entry point for fuel for neighboring MacDill Air Force Base and the Tampa International Airport to the north.

Historic pier makes a great spot for fishing
While Port Tampa City’s first pier, built in the 1890s for the community to enjoy swimming, sailing and fishing, is now the site of American Legion Post #138, neighborhood residents can still get in touch with their water roots at nearby Picnic Island Park. Located on a peninsula just south of the neighborhood, it features a white sand beach, boat dock and fishing pier. Spanish-American War Memorial Park commemorates the role Port Tampa City played as the embarkation point for U.S. troops to Cuba. Roughly 30,000 troops came to the area from April to June 1898. Even Teddy Roosevelt made a stop in Port Tampa City on his way to Cuba to lead the Rough Riders, with a related historical marker found at the park.

Historic landmarks in Port City
The neighborhood remains rooted in history. The community’s architectural centerpiece is the Port Tampa City Library. The Neoclassical structure was built in 1926 to house Port Tampa City’s first bank, which closed in 1933 during the Great Depression. The Port Tampa City Woman’s Club spearheaded an effort to renovate the building in 1993, and it was made a historic landmark a year later. The library relocated there in 1998. The building still features the original marble floors and 16-foot ceiling on the first floor.
