SoHo is close to trendy bars, restaurants and retail stores
Three miles south of downtown Tampa and near the banks of Hillsborough Bay sits SoHo, short for the lively neighborhood's main strip, South Howard Avenue. Dubbed "Restaurant Row," the neighborhood mainly consists of lively bars, office space and upscale eateries. "It's one of the most walkable parts of the entire city," says Austin, a server at Daily Eats, an all-day breakfast café with an outdoor patio – a common feature of SoHo restaurants. "You've got a lot of great bars up and down Howard, and you've got some really nice antique stores at Hyde Park Village." Brian Walsh, a Realtor with SkyCoast Realty Group since 2014, says living in SoHo means residents can walk to most places, like Publix, within five minutes. "A lot of people looking to live in that area benefit from the fact that it is so landlocked in a way; it's only so many miles wide, and everything is compressed." However, this area is more than just a spot to grab a bite to eat. "South Tampa is a really excellent community for people who are still working age," Walsh adds. "Most still have kids to consider, so they need the schools to be pretty good. All the best schools are here."
SoHo's Restaurant Row
Dining options in SoHo cover everything from upscale steak and seafood eateries to fun options for families to classic diners. Bern's Steakhouse earned distinction in 2016 as part of James Beard's Outstanding Wine Program, with over half a million bottles in its cellar. The restaurant has also offered prime-aged steaks and oysters since 1956. As the sun goes down, South Howard Avenue comes alive with locals, nearby college students and visitors. The University of Tampa is 2 miles from SoHo, but Walsh says it's far enough away that noise isn't an issue. "You'll see some students at the bars. If you live in the area, you have to take a little noise along with everything else, but the clubs aren't open until five or six (a.m.) like New York." SoHo offers everything from cocktail lounges to dive bars to dance clubs. LuvChild serves up flavorful Cuban and Latino cuisine with 70s and 80s beats filling the air. The atmosphere is colorful and bold, as are the cocktails. For a trendy gastropub experience with a stylish rooftop bar, Bulla has plenty of Spanish tapas and in-house sangrias. "MacDinton's is one of the originals; they've been there forever," Walsh says. The Irish pub is a popular destination for live music and a tree-covered patio area. Those accompanied by a furry friend can stop at Pups Pub, an indoor and outdoor bar that offers off-leash areas for dogs. Grocery store chains like Publix and Winn-Dixie are within walking distance. Hyde Park Village is a few blocks away, with dozens of retailers, including nationally known brands and local boutiques.

Condos feature parking garages and are within walking distance of the vibrant restaurant scene. One-bedrooms on the north side of the neighborhood range from $250,000 to $340,000, while two- to three-bedroom townhomes closer to Bayshore Boulevard are priced between $650,000 and $800,000. Many residents along South Howard Avenue are renters. Farther south, detached homes have private driveways and fenced-in yards. Single-family detached dwellings can cost between $1 million and $2 million. Mediterranean architecture adds character to the neighborhood, tapping into the style of Old West Tampa. These homes often feature stucco exteriors, rippled clay-tile roofs and arched entryways.

Locals can head to Hyde Park to shoot hoops on one of the two outdoor courts or play on the park's baseball diamond. Nearby, Anderson Park provides a splash pad and a playground. SoHo is within walking distance of the 4.5-mile Bayshore Boulevard Greenway, the longest continuous sidewalk in the United States. The trail – great for dog walking – provides views of the downtown skyline and scenic Hillsborough Bay.

Besides its walkability, the area has rentable electric bike stations on several corners. For drivers, there are major throughways nearby. "It's an easy commute because we have so many options," Walsh says. "I can scoot up Selmon Expressway or take Dale Mabry. Really, I can get anywhere within Tampa in 30 minutes." SoHo's school district draws homebuyers to the area
Children in the area attend Hillsborough County Public Schools, beginning with Mitchell Elementary, which has an A-minus rating on Niche and a 15-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Wilson Middle shares an A-minus grade. The A-plus Plant High is one of the top two public schools in Tampa, twice earning a National Blue Ribbon from the U.S. Department of Education. Walsh adds that the school district is so great that clients have settled for any area property just to get their kids into the public schools in South Tampa.

Tampa Bay has a growing list of fun, annual events
While SoHo doesn't host many events, Walsh says Tampa keeps getting new and better events. "We have the Taco Festival; it's a lot of food-centric events, but we have the Annual Christmas Parade on Davis Island, and everyone lights up their boats. It's really fun." In January, Gasparilla takes the main stage, lasting until March to celebrate the annual invasion of swashbuckling pirates. Events include a parade and a music festival.
Weather warning for the SoHo area
Due to its location near Hillsborough Bay, SoHo is at risk of flooding and hurricanes. Insurance providers now require that the lowest floor elevation, including basements and sometimes crawlspaces, be above the base flood elevation (BFE) plus 1 foot.
