Sun Bay South blends military roots with coastal living
Sun Bay South, a community bordered by Tampa Bay to the west and MacDill Air Force Base to the south, features a mix of newer rental properties and single-family homes built primarily during 20th-century housing booms. In addition to the rentals and traditional housing, the community is home to Winward Lakes, a 55-plus retirement community that appeals to military retirees. Fishing-related industries are big business in Sun Bay South. Numerous fishing charters in the community offer a variety of angling adventures for all ages and skill levels, and multiple marinas provide boat storage and repair.
Architectural variety adds character to inland streets
Inland, the streets of Sun Bay South are filled with varying styles of ranch houses, although bungalows and homes influenced by Spanish, midcentury modern and Gothic styles add to the neighborhood’s architectural diversity. The Gandy Civic Association plays a significant role in serving the residents of Sun Bay South. The organization provides community outreach and partners with residents on infrastructure projects.
Local middle school offers International Baccalaureate program
Sun Bay South features all three levels of secondary education within its borders. It is home to Lanier Elementary School, South Tampa Academy at Monroe Middle School and Robinson High School. Monroe is a magnet school that offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, an internationally focused learning tract that provides entrance into the full IB program.
Parks offer fishing, swimming and mangrove-lined trails
Bobby Hicks Park is the neighborhood’s recreation center. Its 3-acre pond features fishing and the occasional alligator sighting. Nearby is the Bobby Hicks Pool, a public swimming complex that offers a year-round schedule of lessons and aquatics classes. A.J. Palonis Park, named after Lt. Col. Anthony J. Palonis, a decorated veteran who served in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, is located on the northernmost of Sun Bay South’s peninsular areas. It features a boardwalk and a nature trail that winds its way through a canopy of mangroves, known as tunnels, into Tampa Bay. Nearby on the peninsula are the Gandy Boat Ramp and a Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation office.
Easy access to daily essentials on Gandy Boulevar
Sun Bay South is conveniently located to businesses that serve residents’ daily needs. Just south of Gandy Boulevard, the neighborhood’s northern border, is a Walmart Supercenter and a Home Depot. A Publix with a pharmacy and a Target are located just across Gandy Boulevard. Heading west out of the neighborhood, Gandy Boulevard becomes the Gandy Bridge, which allows Sun Bay residents easy access to St. Petersburg across Tampa Bay.
Gandy Civic Association brings residents together year-round
The Gandy Civic Association, centrally located in the community on Oklahoma Avenue, serves the neighborhood in many ways. In addition to partnering with residents on infrastructure projects and renting building space for celebrations and organizational meetings, the organization plans and conducts community events and meetings throughout the year. From Easter egg hunts, Halloween haunted houses and Christmas parties to political candidate forums, the organization’s calendar of events serves children and adults alike. The association ran a public grocery store for two years after the pandemic, and that effort has shifted to providing a community garden.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

The schools you lost are nowhere near Gandy Sunday South. They are all choice schools your child has to travel far too. Our schools are Lanier Elementary - rated very poorly -Monroe Middle School formerly an A until Gates Foundation came through and destroyed it and Robinson High School - rated very high also until Empowering Effective Teachers Grant pushed out all the experienced teachers in 2013-2015. It's not helpful to have mostly inexperienced people in the classrooms. I suppose if your selling a story. I have never heard of a few on your list. People should investigate information provided here.
