Historic center of Cigar City
A historic hub of the cigar industry, Ybor City was built by generations of Cuban, Italian and Spanish immigrants who weathered over a century of economic boom, decline and redevelopment. Across decades, robust mutual aid societies, cultural events and landmark local businesses have defined life in Ybor City, as well as a famous flock of feral chickens. “Ybor City was and continues to be built on community,” says Arminda Mata, President and CEO of the Ybor City Museum Society. “Preserving, promoting and celebrating its cultural heritage is very important to the people living and working here.” Connected by major commuter highways to downtown and the wider region, Ybor City is a historic contributor to Tampa’s cultural and entertainment scenes.

Historic business district around Seventh Avenue
Cobblestone and asphalt streets form blocks around Seventh Avenue, housing a walkable business district operated out of early 20th century brick industrial buildings. Locals can rediscover vintage clothing and knickknacks at La France down the street from the Columbia Restaurant’s full block of dining space, iconic for its Spanish and Cuban cuisines, elegant dining rooms and remaining a family-owned fixture since 1905.
Ybor City’s nightlife drives major traffic after dark. Crowbar and The Ritz Ybor are two venues popular for live music performances and themed dance parties, and spots like James Joyce Irish Pub & Eatery serve food and drinks until the early morning hours in dining spaces packed with patrons and themed decor.
For daily essentials and home goods, locals can head to Winn Dixie and Ikea which stand in opposite corners of Ybor City.

Celebrating industry and immigrant heritages on Fiesta Day
The Ybor City Chamber of Commerce, Italian and Cuban mutual aid societies, J.C. Newman Cigar Company and Ybor City Museum Society are frequent collaborators in hosting Ybor City events. Fiesta Day is an annual street festival which takes over Seventh Avenue with arts vendors, live performances and foods celebrating the Spanish, Cuban, German and Italian influences which built Ybor City. On days without heritage festivals, locals can still immerse themselves in Ybor City’s history at the Tampa Baseball Museum or visit Cuban territory at Parque Jose Marti.

South of I-4, condos in converted industrial buildings or complexes constructed in the 2000s sell for $230,000 to $530,000. While significant yard space is hard to come by, narrow sidewalks boost Ybor City’s walkability, connecting residential areas to businesses in the Ybor City Historic District.

Roving chickens and roosters of Ybor City
“Our chickens and roosters are like our mascots. They’re protected by the city,” Mata says. “They do make a mess on the streets and dig in gardens, though.” Cuban immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries housed Ybor City’s original chicken population, and the free-roaming flock is now a common subject for local artists and a point of community pride, despite their propensity for early morning crowing.
You won't go far in Ybor City without running into several roosters, the mascots of the area.
