Taneytown is a quiet Maryland city in Carroll County, almost halfway between Emmitsburg and Westminster. The town was founded in 1745 by German immigrants and Pennsylvania residents who migrated south to settle over 4,000 acres of land. George Washington even passed through Taneytown in 1791 while he was president and stayed at Good Tavern, which still stands today. There are fewer farms than in the late 1700s, but the area has growing neighborhoods, low housing prices and bed and breakfasts that are often popular wedding venues.
Sharon and Chris Tillman own Georges on York, a renovated Georgian home that is now a bed and breakfast. “There was only one wedding venue in town when we moved here — Atrium 1844, which is nationally ranked,” Sharon says. “Since we’ve been open, two more wedding venues have opened. There’s a good market here, and it’s a beautiful area. People come from D.C., northern Virginia and Pennsylvania when they want a more country destination. We get a lot of love from locals, too, and we host their weddings and baby showers.”

Health care jobs in town and in nearby Westminster
Most residents work in health care, especially at one of the town's nursing homes or doctors’ offices. Retail is the second-most common job industry, particularly at locally owned businesses like Kennie’s Marketplace. “Living in town is very convenient,” Sharon says. “We have a historic district that’s in a renaissance right now. What’s in town is great, industry jobs and fun restaurants, but we’re also right between Frederick and Hanover. We’re even 20 minutes away from Gettysburg.”
Anyone who commutes out of town for work might drive roughly 12 miles down State Route 140 — also called East Baltimore Street— to Westminster, which has the nearest hospital and more health care providers. The Carroll Transit System offers TrailBlazer buses that run to Westminster and reservation-based buses for anyone who needs help getting around Taneytown. The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 50 miles from the city and is the nearest airport with long-distance flights.

Craftsman homes from early 2000s to 2021
Craftsman and split-level homes with moderate yards make up most of Taneytown’s housing. Meades Crossing has homes built as recently as 2022, making it one of the newest neighborhoods, but Meadowbrook is a more established and popular neighborhood. “Taneytown has a quiet setting, and it's usually generation-to-generation living,” says Vince Stonesifer, a Realtor at Cummings & Co. Realtors with over 16 years of real estate experience. “I’ve seen new developments under construction and some still in the design phase. It’s an older town, and most people move there for affordability.”
Carroll Vistas is a 55-and-older community with homes built in the early 2000s. The town’s median price is about $420,000, higher than the national median but lower than Westminster’s median. Summers are often humid with rain, and winters can have below-freezing temperatures with some snow.

Everyday fun and wine tastings at Memorial Park
Taneytown has six parks, but Taneytown Memorial Park is the largest, featuring a fishing pond, athletic courts and playground equipment. Bollinger Park is the newest addition, and it's a place to walk along a paved trail that winds through a pollinator garden and Piney Creek. Some residents drive about 15 miles north to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to explore the historic sites or participate in the National Apple Harvest Festival.
The City of Taneytown hosts annual events to bring the community together, and the Taneytown Wine, Art & Music Festival is among the most popular. Every June, Taneytown Memorial Park turns into a busy spot full of vendors, live bands and wine tastings for visitors who purchase passes. “We have Thunderhead Bowl & Grill, which has a gigantic parking lot,” Sharon says. “They host the Taneytown Farmers Market, and it's open on Saturday mornings from spring to fall.” Most places of worship in town are churches, and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church hosts a food drive every Thursday morning.

Atrium 1844 and Georges on York are two examples of historic homes locals have turned into bed and breakfasts to preserve Taneytown’s early architecture and create draws for tourists. Most residents pick up a few things at stores in Taneytown Shopping Center, but national chain stores like Target are in Westminster, Frederick and Hanover, Pennsylvania.
