A coastal boating community in Pinellas County
Situated along two bayous and a chain of islands is the Anclote River Community in West Central Florida’s Pinellas County. Marinas and boat yards are an integral part of the area, as most residents own at least one boat. “It really is the perfect boating community,” says Noah Rouse, general manager of Anclote Village Marina. “We also have the most islands off the Florida coast, like 14 of them, I believe.” This mixed-use neighborhood also has an industrial park off Anclote Road. The Anclote River, which stretches for 30 miles through two counties, is home to Floridian wildlife, such as manatees and sea turtles.

Waterfront Parks on the Anclote Anchorage
Two bayous have several coves carved out of the shore, which feed into the Anclote River. The Stauffer Chemical Company previously had a pesticide production site along the river, which has resulted in pollution that is still being cleaned up to this day.
Coastal Anclote Trail starts in Pasco County near Key Vista Nature Park, north of Anclote River Community. Its paved 5.6-mile trail reveals towering live oaks and various conifers like longleaf pines, but the trail is well-maintained, and some locals compare it to scenic walks in a Hallmark movie. it’s often used for bike rides, skating and joggers. It is relatively flat with the occasional hill, which gives way to a few freshwater ponds for fishing and marshy areas. The trail also connects to Pinellas Trail, Anclote Gulf and Anclote River parks.

Local dive bars line the Anclote River
Beside the Anclote Village Marina is Miss Vicki's on The River. “It’s a really popular local bar because you can sit outside in front of the water,” Rouse says. The trees, giant oaks and palms taller than the restaurant itself, take center stage and are worked into the layout of the outdoor bar and waterfront, linked together by string lights. When newcomers hear the name “The Boat Club,” they might think of yachts docked at an exclusive clubhouse, but this no-frills dive bar is anything but. Eclectic décor and fliers of local bands cover the aged walls of a building that locals say, “feels like it could fall into the water any minute.”
In the early 1900s, Greek immigrants established a hub for Florida’s sponge industry, which is now the Greektown Historic District, located on Dodecanese Boulevard. “We’re the ‘Sponge Capital of the World’,” Rouse says. “There are a lot of Greek families that go out and dive still. The industry is still alive here.” Historic Downtown Tarpon Springs offers century-old department stores, antiques, independent bookstores and art galleries.
