City Center
Local dining and catching a show at The District Center for the Arts
City Center is Taunton’s largest restaurant hub with cuisines ranging from diners to fine dining. After a successful start in Foxboro, Union Straw opened a secondary location in Taunton. The eatery plates American dishes in a rustic-chic space with exposed wooden beams. The Peal is a Portuguese restaurant with rotating weekend specials, while La Familia’s Italian menu has different cocktails depending on the season. Stores like Target, T. J. Maxx and Ocean State Job Lot are down the road at Taunton Depot Shopping Center. Trucchi’s on Tremont Street is a local favorite for grocery shopping. Residents can learn about the local history of the early English Settlers at the Old Colony History Museum. For a night out, they can catch a comedy show or musical performance at The District Center for the Arts. "We turned a very historic, meaningful building into the city's only high-end entertainment center," Stylos says. “What we do is cater to folks who are looking for something clean and fun to do on the weekends, from comedy shows to 60s and 90s music. They can mix it up and try something different.”Exploring the annual Downtown Art Jam
One of the city’s most patriotic events takes place in City Center. Liberty & Union Day celebrates Taunton's role as the first American colony to raise a flag against British rule. Taunton Green and other Main Street spots host the Downtown Art Jam in the summer. The festival celebrates art in its many forms, from live performances and demonstrations to fashion and film.Colonial houses dating back to the 1800s
Taunton’s Old Colony history lives on in the city’s architecture. Amongst the many housing styles here, the Colonial influence is apparent in homes with large rectangular windows and brick chimneys. Colorful Victorians are sprinkled throughout Cape Cods, ranch-styles and new construction. Closer to downtown, properties sit closer together on sidewalk-lined streets, while further out, they may have larger backyards but lack sidewalks. Single-family houses start at $241,000 and go as high as $880,000. Multi-family homes are also common and range between $285,000 to almost $1.5 million. Condos and townhouses are priced from $287,000 to $519,000.Remote learning options at Taunton Alternative High School
Taunton Public Schools are highly dependent on which streets students live on. For example, Winter Street is assigned to Niche C-plus-rated Elizabeth Pole School for Kindergarten through Grade 4. Students will then go to John F. Park Middle for Grades 5 through 7, also earning a C-plus. With a B-minus, Taunton High teaches 8th through 12th graders. Juniors and seniors may choose to attend Taunton Alternative High School. Taunton Public Virtual Academy is a newer remote learning option and doesn’t currently have a Niche Score. High schoolers looking for programs like carpentry and cosmetology can attend Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School. It receives a C-plus rating.Earning the title of The Christmas City in Taunton Green
The historic Taunton Green was used as a military training ground back in 1743, but now it’s best known for its festive display of holiday lights. The annual spectacle has earned Taunton the nickname of The Christmas City. The area’s historic buildings and monuments honoring soldiers are on display year-round, but the budding trees and daffodils are only admirable in the spring. Hartshorn Park is a more traditional green space with a playground and two slow-pitch softball fields. The Taunton branch of the Old Colony YMCA has a family pool, basketball court, gym and playground. Families can use after-school childcare, teen programs and group exercise classes.Commuter rail station coming to East Taunton in 2025
A commute to Boston will take around 45 to 60 minutes on the Fall River Expressway and Interstate 93. While Taunton doesn’t currently have commuter rail access, the south coast rail project will extend the Middleborough/Lakeville line to connect from Boston to Taunton. Service from the East Taunton Station is expected to be completed by spring 2025. The Greater Attleboro and Taunton Regional Transit Authority operates buses through Taunton and surrounding areas. The neighborhood is primarily car-dependent, but residents living closer to downtown may have some walkability to some restaurants and shops. While Taunton does have an airport, it isn’t open for commercial use, so travelers are more likely to drive an hour or so to Boston Logan International Airport.
