Slow-paced living in wooded west Taunton
On the far edge of Taunton lies Westville, a quiet residential suburb where houses are surrounded by forests for miles. Although Westville has little in the way of businesses and amenities, residents here prefer making the trip into town when it means living on large, secluded lots. Plus, this area is rife with outdoor recreation. “We have so much preserved land set aside for wildlife,” says Virginia Johnson, a reference librarian with the Taunton Public Library who was born and raised in the city. “There are parks, swimming pools, wildlife sanctuaries — and that’s not even mentioning the rivers. It’s wonderful to be in a city that isn’t all housing developments, though we have those, too.” As Taunton grows, more new construction houses have arrived in Westville, but the neighborhood maintains its away-from-the-city feel.

Multi-acre properties and brand-new builds
Homes in Westville sit along winding, one-lane backroads framed by dense greenery and old-growth trees. While much of this area was developed between the late-20th and early 21st century, some houses were built as far back as the 1910s. Cape Cods, cottages, and ranch-style and bi-level homes are common among older properties, while some recently built New Traditional houses offer upward of 2,000 square feet. Out here, multiacre lots are easier to come by than in central Taunton, with sizes typically ranging from a third of an acre to 2 acres. Some have even more accompanying farmland, with outbuildings such as barns, silos and stables to boot. Prices start at roughly $350,000 for homes in need of some TLC and can climb to $950,000 for new-construction houses or homes with multiple acres of land. Westville currently has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

Hiking at Rehoboth State Forest
Westville is densely forested and surrounded by nature preserves, including Rehoboth State Forest. This rugged outdoor area spans 138 acres of woodlands and Atlantic white cedar swamps, with a 1.25-mile loop trail that makes for an easy hike. Dogs are permitted in the park, making it a popular spot for folks to let their pups roam. Northwest of the area is Everett Leonard Park & Pool, the neighboring town of Norton’s primary recreation space. Norton Youth Baseball and Softball plays at the park’s ballfields, while informal pickup games take place on the basketball and volleyball courts. Though the playground is a mainstay for kids, the Gaga Pit added in 2024 is a new favorite. Those who prefer the rolling greens of a golf course can inquire about membership or book a public tee time at Segregansett Country Club, where the 18-hole course is the sixth-oldest in the state.

Taunton High offers a variety of athletics
The neighborhood is served by Taunton Public Schools, which divides young students between Chamberlain Elementary and Bennett Elementary. The former serves the northern half of the area and scores a B-minus from Niche, while the latter earns a C-plus and serves the section. Friedman Middle is adjacent to Chamberlain Elementary and receives a B-minus. The B-rated Taunton High sports over 20 athletic teams, with the girls’ softball team most recently winning the 2024 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I State Championship.
Shopping and dining are nearby on U.S. Highway 44
Westville is almost entirely residential, meaning there are few businesses in the neighborhood. Most shopping and dining can be found along U.S. Highway 44 to the south, which is a main thoroughfare into central Taunton. Hannaford is the nearest grocery store, and it’s surrounded by fast-food chains and a handful of local restaurants. Kinfolks BBQ is known for its heaping sampler platters of brisket, ribs and pulled pork, while Yamato Japanese Steakhouse specializes in maki rolls and hibachi. Down the street, La Familia Restaurant is one of Taunton’s most popular spots, blending Portuguese and Italian fare into a menu featuring both chicken Mozambique and fettuccine Alfredo. Between the chain stores that dot the one-lane highway is Readmore Books, an independent bookseller that offers used books and local reads. More locally owned shops can be found in downtown Taunton, surrounding the historic Taunton Green. “We’ve had lots of small businesses open in Taunton recently. Around the green, there’s a pastry shop, a Mediterranean café and a wine bar,” Johnson says. “A lot of people also work in Taunton, even if they live on the outskirts. So it’s nice to be able to walk around, get lunch at a local restaurant and enjoy the weather on the green.”

Commuting to Providence or Boston is common
Tremont Street runs through Westville and connects residents to Taunton’s city center 3 to 5 miles east. Providence is roughly 20 miles southwest, and Boston is about 40 miles northeast. U.S. Highway 44 is the nearest major thoroughfare and is a couple of miles south of the neighborhood, though Interstate 495 is also about 5 miles north. Due to its rural setting, residents will need a car to navigate Westville, as it is not served by any public transit, and the one-lane roads running through the neighborhood are not lined by sidewalks or bike lanes. “A lot of people commute to Boston, and they’re building a commuter rail,” Johnson says, “But we also have our own industrial park right here in Taunton.” Just north of Westville, Myles Standish Industrial Park houses major employers such as the Boston Globe, Williams Sonoma and General Dynamics.
