A wooded Taunton suburb surrounded by highways and industry
Carved out of the landscape of west Taunton between the train tracks and forests is a little sliver called Whittenton Junction. Bordered to the east by the meandering Three Mile River, this neighborhood extends from the suburban streets surrounding central Taunton to the winding backroads on the very edge of town. “It’s definitely a commuter’s location,” says Katie Elderkin, a Realtor with Keller Williams South Watuppa who has sold homes in the area. “It’s between Interstate 495 and U.S. Highway 44, plus some state highways like 140 go around there. You can commute to Boston without paying the Boston prices for a house.” Some careers are even closer, with the Myles Standish Industrial Park housing dozens of businesses just north of the neighborhood.

From cottages on narrow streets to Colonial Revivals on large lots
The neighborhood’s streets are narrow and lined by houses with petite lawns on the southeastern side, close to Taunton’s downtown district.. Many of these homes were built in the early 20th century, though some date as far back as 1850, with styles ranging from bungalows to Cape Cods to two-story cottages. Farther northwest are homes from the 1970s onward, spanning ranch-style homes and Colonial Revivals to recently constructed New Traditional houses. These typically have a bit more breathing room, with winding streets and lot sizes averaging about a half-acre.
“There’s been some new construction in the area,” Elderkin notes. “It’s because the location is attractive to buyers. And it’s more affordable, to an extent. There’s about a $100,000 difference between a house here and the same house in Brockton.” Single-family homes list from $300,000 to the upper $700,000s, with some multifamily properties at the upper end of this price range. Townhouses in the Cranes Landing community are priced between $360,000 and $420,000, while mobile homes in 55-plus neighborhoods sell from $120,000 to $235,000.

The camp offers specialized sports clinics and academies, plus activities such as rock climbing, archery and swimming. More athletic leagues for youth and adults alike are open for registration at Fore Kicks, a sprawling indoor and outdoor facility with 11 indoor fields, four outdoor turf fields and a driving range. Year-round leagues include flag football, lacrosse and soccer, and many children growing up in the Whittenton Junction neighborhood look back fondly at birthday parties in Fore Kicks’ inflatable park.

For riverfront dining and a sports bar vibe, folks head to Home Plate Bay Street Grill, about 2 miles east near Lake Sabbatia. “New York Bagel Company just opened near the interstate too,” Elderkin says. “I haven’t even been to that location yet, because there’s always a line.”
