Whittenton Junction
Neighborhood in Taunton, Massachusetts
Bristol County 02780
From cottages on narrow streets to Colonial Revivals on large lots
The neighborhood’s streets are narrow and lined by houses with petite lawns on the southeastern side, close to Taunton’s downtown district.. Many of these homes were built in the early 20th century, though some date as far back as 1850, with styles ranging from bungalows to Cape Cods to two-story cottages. Farther northwest are homes from the 1970s onward, spanning ranch-style homes and Colonial Revivals to recently constructed New Traditional houses. These typically have a bit more breathing room, with winding streets and lot sizes averaging about a half-acre.“There’s been some new construction in the area,” Elderkin notes. “It’s because the location is attractive to buyers. And it’s more affordable, to an extent. There’s about a $100,000 difference between a house here and the same house in Brockton.” Single-family homes list from $300,000 to the upper $700,000s, with some multifamily properties at the upper end of this price range. Townhouses in the Cranes Landing community are priced between $360,000 and $420,000, while mobile homes in 55-plus neighborhoods sell from $120,000 to $235,000.
Indoor and outdoor athletics at Fore Kicks, plus summers at Camp Riverside
Although the Three Mile River borders sections of Whittenton Junction, most folks head to the nearby Watson Pond State Park for waterfront recreation such as swimming, kayaking and fishing. Closer to home, some kids might spend their summers at Camp Riverside, a 100-acre tract of forests, creeks and fields owned and operated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South. The camp offers specialized sports clinics and academies, plus activities such as rock climbing, archery and swimming. More athletic leagues for youth and adults alike are open for registration at Fore Kicks, a sprawling indoor and outdoor facility with 11 indoor fields, four outdoor turf fields and a driving range. Year-round leagues include flag football, lacrosse and soccer, and many children growing up in the Whittenton Junction neighborhood look back fondly at birthday parties in Fore Kicks’ inflatable park.Baseball and softball games on Friedman Middle’s campus
Homes in Whittenton Junction are zoned to Taunton Public Schools, with most students attending Chamberlain Elementary. The elementary school is next door to Friedman Middle, and both schools score a B-minus from Niche. An expansive baseball complex is located on the academic campus and serves the Taunton Western Little League and the Taunton Girls Softball League. Taunton High earns a B grade and has an Academic Challenge Club, which competes against other schools nationwide as part of PBS’s High School Quiz Show. The quiz bowl team made it to national TV in 2020.Industry along the Mass Coastal Railroad, eateries and grocers close by
Most of Whittenton Junction is residential, with only a handful of businesses from the nearby industrial park or along the Mass Coastal Railroad, which runs through the area. For shopping and dining, many residents head to City Center Taunton, East Taunton or Raynham, where retail giants can be found along major thoroughfares such as County and Dean streets. A Trucchi’s Supermarkets location on Tremont Street is convenient for grocery trips right in the neighborhood, and it’s directly adjacent to popular pizza delivery and take-out spot A-1 Pizza. For riverfront dining and a sports bar vibe, folks head to Home Plate Bay Street Grill, about 2 miles east near Lake Sabbatia. “New York Bagel Company just opened near the interstate too,” Elderkin says. “I haven’t even been to that location yet, because there’s always a line.”Office and manufacturing space at Myles Standish Industrial Park
Myles Standish Industrial Park is directly north of the neighborhood, branching off Crane Avenue onto Myles Standish Boulevard. The industrial park is home to 100 businesses, ranging from offices to manufacturing and warehousing facilities, with new additions to the campus still being built. Part of Massachusetts Route 140 passes through the neighborhood and puts residents roughly 1 to 5 miles from City Center Taunton. Interstate 495 and U.S. Highway 44 are north and south of the area, respectively, and make for a 20-mile commute to Providence or a 40-mile drive to Boston. Morton Hospital is nearby in City Center Taunton, while the nearest international airport, Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport, is in Providence.
