A glimpse into Taunton’s past and future
Whittenton is focused on moving forward without changing the neighborhood’s character. Organizations like Whittenton Community Partnership are heading up projects like putting up new pole banners and sponsoring murals. “There are a lot of old manufacturing buildings in Whittenton,” says Debbie Edwards, a real estate agent with Jack Conway & Co. "You can tell what it would have been like in the past when it was a huge industry.” The Whittenton Mills Complex is a glimpse into Taunton’s past that will impact its future. It is expected to turn into a large apartment complex with some commercial space. The Loft is a resilience center and community space that will provide programming, support, and events for residents. Weir Village has a CAP Index crime score of 4 out of 10, on par with the national average of 4.

Whittenton's two most common housing styles are Colonials, raised ranch and ranch-styles. There’s a mix of renovated homes from the late 1880s all the way up to contemporary builds from 2024. Properties are primarily concentrated in the south tip of the neighborhood, where some sit close tighter, and others are spaced out between plots of forested land. Single-family homes range between $280,000 to $750,000. Multi-family dwellings with three to 12 bedrooms sell for $393,000 to $855,000. Condos and townhouses start at $208,000 and go as high as $560,000.

Shopping and dining off of Interstate 495
“Whittenton has a small neighborhood feel,” Edwards says. “It’s a couple of stores, a fire department and catholic churches. The houses and business are close together.” The cluster of shopping and dining off of Interstate 495 includes Bj’s, Dollar Tree and a handful of fast-food chains. In the same plaza, Brack’s Grille and Tap's Taunton location is a casual eatery that mainly serves American cuisine with a few international dishes like Portuguese steak. Trucchi’s off Tremont Street is the closest grocery store. Pizza shops, dinners and small businesses like Whittenton Hardware line Bay Street. The neighborhood is also home to Morton Hospital.

Taunton High's new mural
Joseph C. Chamberlain Elementary serves kindergarteners to 4th graders. Students in Grades 5 through 7 attend Benjamin Friedman Middle before starting Taunton High in 8th grade. All three schools receive B-minuses on Niche. In 2024, Taunton High revealed a new 40-foot by 60-foot mural depicting the school’s history of strong performing arts programs. Both schools earn a C-plus. Taunton Public Virtual Academy is a newer remote learning school that doesn’t currently have a Niche Score.
