Like much of Upstate South Carolina, Taylors’ 20th-century heritage revolves around manufacturing. The Southern Bleachery and Piedmont Print Works opened in 1924, coloring and printing fabrics. At its peak, life in the community revolved around the factory, which employed over 1,000 people. But in 1965, the bleachery closed, delivering a hit to the local economy. The facility sat mainly empty for nearly 50 years until 2008 when a private owner bought the property to redevelop it. Now known as Taylors Mill, the space is currently utilized by artists, artisans and even a brewery. Taylors has lower home prices than nearby Greenville while still offering access to the city’s downtown, but it’s the vibrant spirit that sets the community apart from other suburbs.

Suburban subdivisions throughout Taylors
Taylors is one of the larger suburbs of Greenville, with a population of roughly 23,000. The community’s median home price is just under $350,000, compared to a median of about $360,000 in Greenville and the national figure of $420,000. “Homes are considered relatively affordable and also offer larger lots than buyers would find closer to Greenville,” says Daniel Ezelle, a Realtor with Ezelle Hines Properties who has been working in the Upstate for more than a decade. The area offers a mix of styles, with homes set back in wooded subdivisions. Ranch-style homes from as early as the middle of the 20th century and newer Craftsman homes make up most of the supply, while split-level homes and townhouses can also be found within Taylors’ neighborhoods.

Artisans and a brewery at Taylors Mill
Wade Hampton Boulevard cuts through the center of Taylors and is the main commercial corridor of the community. Restaurants and strip malls sit around the highway, while big box stores and supermarkets can be found a short drive in either direction. But Taylors Mill is the focal point of the area. In addition to its studio and event spaces, the facility has a brewery, a restaurant and a bar-cade. Residents can also drive to Greenville and its restaurants and events, such as a weekly farmers market.

Hiking and biking at Paris Mountain State Park
Taylors offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Corey Burns Park has five fields for baseball and softball, while the Pebble Creek Golf Course meanders through the western half of the area. The Blue Ridge Mountains are also nearby, with Paris Mountain State Park just five miles west of Taylors. Seventeen miles of trails wind through the park, circumnavigating a lake for fishing and swimming. “It’s a great place for families where you feel like you're hiking in the mountains, but you're only ten minutes from the city,” Ezelle says.
