Telford has a small-town feel with agricultural roots

First settled in 1780, Telford began as an agricultural community housing mills, woodworking and livestock facilities. Today, backyard livestock pens and farms still make up a good portion of the community. Over the years, local spots like Telford Diner and Mountain View Restaurant have functioned as spaces for residents to convene, while Persimmon Ridge Park and Brighton Zoo offer varying recreational opportunities. Jonesborough and Johnson City sit within 14 miles and serve as retail and dining hubs. “Telford is like Mayberry because it's such a tight-knit community,” says Lora Dowling, a Realtor with Greater Impact Realty and former resident. “It has a great feeling because of how small the community is and the schools there are great.”

Telford's ranch-style homes

Old wooden barns and small stables along Telford’s winding residential streets point to the area’s farming roots, while occasional backyard chicken coops and groups of hay bales highlight its spirit today. Ranch and raised ranch-style homes built during the late 1900s and into the 21st century sit on lots averaging just over a half-acre. Fanning out from Old State Route 34, homes of a similar style sit atop larger acreage on rolling hills and fields where cows graze and deer wander. “When I do sales in Telford, I always say I am selling a slice of paradise with the mountains and all,” Dowling says. Homes typically sell between $115,000 and $400,000. However, more recently built homes on more significant acreage can reach up to $1 million.

Troyer's Mountain View Market's fresh offerings

Quick trips lead to the busy Telford Diner on Mill Street. The homey spot is known for its warm atmosphere and comfort-style food. Mountain View Restaurant is 4 miles out, where patrons can enjoy fried catfish while appreciating knick-knacks and memorabilia covering the restaurant’s walls. Troyer’s Mountain View Country Market shares the parking lot. “It’s a big shopping place with lots of fresh groceries and many people go for the food,” Dowling says. “They also do a Christmas fare where you can get crafts and such.” Most head into neighboring communities for big-box shopping. Jonesborough offers grocers like Ingles Market and Food City, while The Mall at Johnson City provides an array of indoor retailers. Both cities also have downtown districts lined with locally owned shops and boutiques.

Youth league sports at Persimmon Ridge Park

Though home to a baseball diamond, Telford Ruritan Ball Field off Telford New Victory Road is most visitors stop by to walk the trail that loops the park. 5 miles northeast, Persimmon Ridge Park offers year-round recreational opportunities, thanks to the adjoining Wetlands Water Park and series of athletic fields. “That’s where we do a lot of soccer games for the kid’s rec league,” Dowling says. “They also have walking trails there as well.” Residents can also traverse the many trails of Sampson Mountain to the south or stop by Brights Zoo, 4 miles northwest, from spring through fall to feed giraffes and learn about other wild animals.
