From the community of East Temple it is a short drive out to the small communities of Oscar and Heidenheimer, where open farmland and country roads create a rural feel. This area sits within easy reach of Baylor Scott & White Medical Center and other major clinics, giving it a strong medical identity and making it popular with healthcare workers who want a short commute. It also appeals to some military households who split their time between here and Fort Hood, one of the largest military bases in the world.
New builds in developing modern subdivisions
The community has been growing fast, with newly built contemporary homes from the 2020s popping up alongside contemporary ranch-style and New Traditional houses in planned subdivisions. The neighborhood’s newer construction appeals to buyers looking for modern finishes and easy access to main roads like I-35. Home prices generally range from the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$400,000s, depending on size and features. "You can find brand new starter homes out here," says Ali Thompson, Temple resident and Realtor with Real Broker, LLC. "These aren't fixer-uppers, they're move-in ready and they're area-affordable compared to Austin."
Flexible options in Belton ISD
This area is served by the Belton Independent School District, which specializes in bilingual programs. The system lets families apply for school transfers each year instead of offering open enrollment. Nearby schools include Southwest Elementary, Belton Middle and Belton High School, which are supported by the Belton Educational Foundation, a local nonprofit that helps students with tuition and testing costs for AP and dual-credit courses and funds leadership opportunities such as Boys and Girls State.
Water parks, trails and museums on Temple history
South Temple Community Park is home to Lions Junction Water Park, a playground and a hiking trail. Lions Park features a dog park and nature trail and often hosts outdoor concerts and events. The area is filled with museums as well, including:
Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum in the historic Santa Fe Depot
Temple Children’s Museum for family-friendly, interactive play
Czech Heritage Museum and Genealogy Center, where visitors can discover Texas Czech history and culture.
International bites and everyday essentials
There are several locally owned spots here to grab a bite, including Old Jody’s Restaurant, known for its Southern comfort food, Cantina 1948 for Tex-Mex dishes and margaritas and La Dalat Vietnamese Cuisine for pho and noodle bowls. For groceries, locals usually shop at H-E-B or the Walmart Supercenter nearby.
Easy I-35 access to bigger cities
Temple sits right on Interstate 35, so commuters can usually drive to Austin in about an hour and reach Georgetown in a little less than that, depending on traffic. “There’s easy access to the big city and it’s much more relaxed than Austin and Georgetown,” says local real estate agent Ali Thompson. The city also has regional bus service through The HOP, which connects Temple with nearby communities in Bell County and beyond. For longer trips, the closest major airport is Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, about 65 miles south, with additional flight options at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and smaller regional airports in Killeen and Waco.
