Classic Americana hidden in Temple’s Garden District
The shady suburbs 2 miles north of downtown Temple are named the Garden District for a reason: mature oak trees line the streets and shade wide yards from the Central Texas sun. “It’s a very nice, established area,” says Bradley Sheppard, Realtor for 15 years with Better Homes & Gardens Bradfield. “We’re kind of talking classic Americana: big large oak trees line the streets, wide lots. It’s just very inviting.” It’s common to see kids walking to schools in the community, like Jefferson Elementary, and residents strolling on the sidewalk after a day of work. Just 2 miles south, people dine at local spots and shop at boutiques that retain their 1920s facades. There’s no shortage of activity in the area, with constant seasonal events, like a Christmas parade during the holidays and a free outdoor concert series every summer. In the Garden District, people have all these amenities within a few miles of home.

Garden District provides spacious streets and primarily 1950s residences
Large oak trees line the streets and provide pleasant shade over the community. Under the canopy of green sit 1950s ranch styles and bungalows, as well as a few homes dating back to the 1930s. “It just feels like home,” Sheppard says. “Neighbors are always out and about, and kids feel safe playing in the wide streets and spacious lawns.” Prices can start at $150,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style home, but most range from $200,000 for a four-bedroom bungalow with a small yard to $300,000 for a spacious three-bedroom ranch-style home with a roomy lawn framed by large shade trees. Larger budgets can find 4,000-square-foot 1930s prairie-style mansions with indoor pools for nearly $600,000.
