Garden DIstrict
Garden District provides spacious streets and primarily 1950s residences
Large oak trees line the streets and provide pleasant shade over the community. Under the canopy of green sit 1950s ranch styles and bungalows, as well as a few homes dating back to the 1930s. “It just feels like home,” Sheppard says. “Neighbors are always out and about, and kids feel safe playing in the wide streets and spacious lawns.” Prices can start at $150,000 for a three-bedroom ranch-style home, but most range from $200,000 for a four-bedroom bungalow with a small yard to $300,000 for a spacious three-bedroom ranch-style home with a roomy lawn framed by large shade trees. Larger budgets can find 4,000-square-foot 1930s prairie-style mansions with indoor pools for nearly $600,000.Schools are within walking distance from Garden District families
Students in the neighborhood may attend the Temple Independent School District, which Niche grades an overall B-plus. Many kids use the wide sidewalks to walk to Jefferson Elementary, which is rated a B by Niche. They also have a short trip to Lamar Middle School, earning a B-minus, and many kids play after school next door at Miller Park. A short drive across the train tracks brings older students to Temple High, also given a B by Niche. Temple is one of the largest high schools in Texas, having over 8,700 students and a massive campus with a swimming center, tennis facility and an 11,500-seat football stadium.Outdoor recreation and an activities center span several nearby green spaces
At Jefferson Park, kids climb on the pirate-ship-themed playground, and pups enjoy a game of fetch in the grassy space. Folks can go for a morning run or stroll on the paved paths at Miller Park, where they can also shoot hoops. Kids can cool off on the splash pad and playground close by. “You’ll see a lot of people walking in the evenings after work,” Sheppard says. “Not everywhere, but a lot of parts have sidewalks.” Art lovers regularly check out the new exhibits and performances at the Cultural Activities Center, less than 1 mile from many homes.Restaurants and boutiques in downtown Temple
Residents are only 2 miles from Temple’s small downtown, full of local restaurants and boutique shops that retain their 1920s facades. Folks enjoy a casual lunch or a romantic date night at Pignetti’s Italian Restaurant. Around the corner, people grab a drink around the corner at Bird Creek Brewing. Locals can walk a few streets over to check out Temple’s train-town history at the Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum, before grabbing a to-go order at The Yard Food Truck Plaza. Shoppers can look to Bon Bon Market for specialty food items. To get their grocery essentials, people drive a little over 1 mile to H-E-B. Department stores can be found at Temple Mall, as well as a Walmart Supermarket.Getting in and around Garden District
According to Sheppard, Garden District residents are roughly 3 miles away from medical care facilities like Baylor Scott & White Medical Center and only about three to four minutes away from downtown Central. Interstate 35 gets residents to the broader region, including Waco, a 34-mile drive. The Hop provides on-demand public transportation by bus around the entire city.Temple provides festive celebrations throughout the calendar year
Neighbors can participate in a list of annual events. During the holidays, everyone sees the tree lighting and checks out the floats at the annual Christmas Parade. Every Spring, pup parents take their four-legged friends downtown for Paws on the Plaza. At the end of every April, people come from all around for the Bloomin Temple Festival, live music, festival food and carnival games. In the summertime, folks check out local produce at the Temple Farmer’s Market every weekend and chill out listening to live music at Hot Summer Sounds, a weekly free concert series.
