Brick manor homes along a historic boulevard 2 miles from Downtown
In the 1920s, back when coal mining and corn milling still dominated Terra Haute’s economy, brick manor homes emerged along Ohio Boulevard. The thoroughfare joined the National Register of Historic Places in the late 1980s, and many of these stately properties still stand today, their front windows overlooking century-old oak and cedar trees. Ohio Boulevard intersects Deming, a residential neighborhood less than 2 miles from Downtown. “There’s always someone out with their dog or running [along Ohio Boulevard],” says Debbie Hill of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. After school, kids walk home from Woodrow Wilson Junior High with their backpacks in tow. Modest single-family homes branch out from the boulevard on gridded side streets. Fast food chains like Wendy’s and long-standing neighborhood haunts like Charlie’s Pub & Grub are a quick drive, or even a walk, away from the neighborhood, and Indiana State University lecture halls stand next to downtown museums 5 minutes west. At the center of the Hoosier state, Deming merges history with accessibility.
Century-old properties on compact raised lots
Within Demining, most homes were built between the 1920s and 1950s; architectural styles are reflective of the era. Prospective buyers will find two-story Colonials, bungalows, Craftsman homes and modest ranch-style houses on raised compact lots — most fall under a quarter acre — and front lawns sit under the shadow of 80-foot trees. It’s common to see quaint brick chimneys, decorative dormer windows and detached garages at the end of narrow driveways. Prices within Deming hover between $130,000 and $330,000, and the neighborhood’s most expensive properties sit along Ohio Boulevard.

It’s home to a playground, arboretum and a public pool, which stay open from the end of May through August; daily admission is $4, but some locals invest in season passes. The park also has a popular 18-hole disc golf course, and there’s even a miniature train, the “Spirit of Terre Haute,” that offers $1.50 ticketed rides throughout the spring and summer season. The park has onsite basketball courts, pickleball courts and plenty of picnic shelters, and locals can also enroll in weekly ceramics classes at Deming Park Pottery Studio. Closer to the neighborhood, Thompson Park and Curtis Gilbert Park both have smaller playgrounds.

Daily regulars at Charlie’s Pub & Grub
Charlie’s Pub & Grub has been a Terre Haute staple since the early 1970s; it’s changed ownership over the decades, but the famous Tweety Burger has remained a constant. “The beef is what sets it apart,” says dayshift manager Kai Burnett, who’s worked at the restaurant for over six years. “We get our meat delivered fresh every day from a place called Kroc’s Butcher Shop, and we have our own seasonings that we put on every item.” Charlie’s, according to Burnett, is the type of place that attracts regulars. “Every single day, we have the same group of guys that come in to drink and sit with each other,” she shares. To the north, Wabash Avenue is lined with fast-casual eateries like Taco Casita and national chains, everything from Long John Silver’s to Starbucks. Kroger is the go-to for grocery runs, and there’s also Baesler’s Market off Poplar Street.
You can swing by Starbucks on your way to work for that morning coffee fix.

Downtown, families can check out the indoor treehouse at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum or learn about local history at the Eugene V. Debs Museum, where admission is free.
