Century-old properties on compact raised lots
Within Demining, most homes were built between the 1920s and 1950s; architectural styles are reflective of the era. Prospective buyers will find two-story Colonials, bungalows, Craftsman homes and modest ranch-style houses on raised compact lots — most fall under a quarter acre — and front lawns sit under the shadow of 80-foot trees. It’s common to see quaint brick chimneys, decorative dormer windows and detached garages at the end of narrow driveways. Prices within Deming hover between $130,000 and $330,000, and the neighborhood’s most expensive properties sit along Ohio Boulevard.Daily regulars at Charlie’s Pub & Grub
Charlie’s Pub & Grub has been a Terre Haute staple since the early 1970s; it’s changed ownership over the decades, but the famous Tweety Burger has remained a constant. “The beef is what sets it apart,” says dayshift manager Kai Burnett, who’s worked at the restaurant for over six years. “We get our meat delivered fresh every day from a place called Kroc’s Butcher Shop, and we have our own seasonings that we put on every item.” Charlie’s, according to Burnett, is the type of place that attracts regulars. “Every single day, we have the same group of guys that come in to drink and sit with each other,” she shares. To the north, Wabash Avenue is lined with fast-casual eateries like Taco Casita and national chains, everything from Long John Silver’s to Starbucks. Kroger is the go-to for grocery runs, and there’s also Baesler’s Market off Poplar Street.A planetarium at Terre Haute South Vigo High School
Many students within the neighborhood live a few blocks down the street from Vigo County public schools like Davis Park Elementary and Woodrow Wilson Junior High, both of which earn C-plus grades from Niche. Terre Haute South Vigo High School, about 4 miles north, receives a B from Niche. The high school is home to a small planetarium, which hosts local field trips and public events, and afterschool activities include German Club and Chess Club. High Schoolers can also pursue dual credit opportunities through Indiana State University or Ivy Tech State College.Football at Memorial Stadium, live music and Downtown museums
During football season, fans gather in Memorial Stadium to cheer on the Indiana State University Sycamores; built in the mid-1920s, the bleachers can seat close to 13,000. On the weekends, Charlie’s Pub & Grub hosts local bands, and Burnett says popular recurring acts include Abbi Scott and Soupbone. Downtown, families can check out the indoor treehouse at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum or learn about local history at the Eugene V. Debs Museum, where admission is free. Hill also highlights The Mill, an outdoor amphitheater where past performers have included Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Beach Boys.City transit and Interstate 70 to Indianapolis
In Terre Haute, city buses connect downtown and Indiana State University to Honey Creek Mall, Ivy Tech’s Terre Haute campus and Plaza North Shopping Center. Fares are under $2. The Terre Haute Regional Airport, home to the ISU Aviation Program, is less than 7 miles from Downtown via Ohio Boulevard and Poplar Street. For commercial flight options, Deming residents drive 60 miles — an hour and 15 minutes — along Interstate 70 to reach the Indianapolis International Airport. For medical care, residents head to Union Hospital, a 275-bed facility known for its top-rated stroke care and robotic technology. Along with the Vigo County School Corporation, it’s also one of Terre Haute’s largest employers.A miniature train in Deming Park
Deming Park, the largest in the city, spans over 175 acres at the end of Ohio Boulevard. It’s home to a playground, arboretum and a public pool, which stay open from the end of May through August; daily admission is $4, but some locals invest in season passes. The park also has a popular 18-hole disc golf course, and there’s even a miniature train, the “Spirit of Terre Haute,” that offers $1.50 ticketed rides throughout the spring and summer season. The park has onsite basketball courts, pickleball courts and plenty of picnic shelters, and locals can also enroll in weekly ceramics classes at Deming Park Pottery Studio. Closer to the neighborhood, Thompson Park and Curtis Gilbert Park both have smaller playgrounds.
