Local haunts, regular customers and 100-year-old homes in Southeast Terre Haute
At Charlie’s Pub & Grub, dayshift manager Kai Burnett greets long-time customers by name. She also has their food and drink orders down pat. “Some of the regulars like to sit in the same spots, and I do reserve the same tables for the people that come every single week,” she says. Customers here range from 21 to over 100 years old; in Terre Haute neighborhoods like DeVaney, some families stay for generations, developing loyalties to restaurants—like Charlie’s—and maintaining century-old homes on shaded streets. The neighborhood has also seen new development in recent years, and vinyl-sided housing constructed post-pandemic contrasts with farmhouses built as early as 1900, back when iron and steel mills dominated the Terre Haute economy. Downtown museums, government offices and restaurants are about 3 miles west of the neighborhood beside the Wabash River, and larger cities like Indianapolis are a straight shot along Interstate 70.
Early 20th-century cottages paired with vinyl-sided New Traditionals
On Terre Haute’s South East side, homes range in style, price point and age. “DeVaney is going be a little bit more average property values,” says Debbie Hill, who works with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. “There’s still two- and three-bedrooms, but there also might be a subdivision or two with new construction.” Prospective buyers will find bungalows with quaint dormer windows, ranch-style houses and cottages on gridded streets. Lot sizes are relatively compact, hovering under one-fifth acre, and sidewalks are shaded by lush mulberry and oak trees. Modest, early 20th-century homes in need of extensive renovations can start around $60,000, whereas refinished properties can range from around $115,000 to close to $200,000. As Hill indicates, there’s also a selection of vinyl and brick-sided New Traditional homes with attached two-car garages, and sale prices for these properties typically fall between $250,000 and $375,000.

Deming Park disc golf, swimming, train rides and Santa Claus
Just outside the boundaries of the neighborhood is Deming Park, established in the early 1920s. The 175-acre expanse includes a popular disc golf course, basketball courts and picnic shelters that families can rent out for reunions and birthday parties. Kilie Smith, Assistant Superintendent of the city’s Parks Department, also highlights the large playground, swimming pool, onsite pottery studio and a feature called “The Spirit of Terre Haute.” “The Spirit of Terre Haute is an amusement park train that runs throughout the park,” she says, adding, “A lot of kiddos and families enjoy it. It operates in the summer and early fall.” Rides are also offered during Christmas in the Park, an annual celebration that’s been going strong in Terre Haute for nearly 40 years. Santa Claus usually makes a guest appearance, and local businesses decorate picnic shelters with twinkle lights.
In Deming Park you'll find playgrounds, basketball courts, a pond, artwork and holly arboretum.

Annual park events and Indiana State University Athletics
Along with Christmas in the Park, other annual festivities in Deming Park include Easter Egg hunts, dog costume contests and “Haunted Halloween Happenings,” which includes both hay and train rides. Found along 25th Street, the Community Theatre of Terre Haute has roots in the city dating back to the 1920s; it’s still a destination for musicals, plays and youth classes today. DeVaney’s proximity to Indian State University also means a regular calendar of sporting events, and some locals invest in season tickets to watch the Sycamores kick-off at Memorial Stadium, about 2 miles away from the neighborhood. The small city is home to a selection of museums and event venues; there’s the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, which plays in Tilson Music Hall on ISU’s campus, the Terre Haute Children’s Museum, known for its interactive exhibits, and touring bands perform at “The Mill,” an outdoor amphitheater beside the Wabash.
