Centuries of architectural history in Terre Haute's oldest neighborhood
Stately Victorian homes in various shades of blue, pink and yellow line numbered streets in Farrington's Grove, Terre Haute's oldest neighborhood. Today, it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a volunteer-run neighborhood association works to maintain its pre-20th century charm. "The architecture is what really sets it apart, the old style of homes," says Laura Hudson, who's a lifelong resident of Terre Haute and a local Realtor. "It's got kind of a subdivision feel, but in town. There's a Facebook group where they plan trick-or-treating and other neighborhood events," she adds. Along with its historic homes, part of Farrington's Grove's appeal is its proximity to shopping and dining. Some residents live within walking distance of upscale Terre Haute favorites like Bar Bosco, while others seek out fast-casual restaurants along U.S. Highway 41. Indiana State University, which has become a cultural epicenter in Terre Haute since its founding in 1865, is also less than a mile away. In Farrington's Grove, history lessons come in the form of decorative wainscoting and front porch boot scrapers, reminders of a time when factory foreman rode in horse-drawn carriages and steamboats navigated the Wabash.
Pre-20th century homes with curb appeal
"People like the area because there are old, often large homes," says Hudson, adding that a lot of the properties have been restored to their former glory. Farrington's Grove was first established in the 1880s and architectural styles here are characteristic of the era; there are Victorians, Greek Revivals, Queen Annes and Italianates with painted, decorative trim. Prospective buyers will also find Craftsman and Tudor Revival style houses built in the 1930s and '40s. The neighborhood's largest homes typically sell for between $200,000 and $250,000 and lot sizes are relatively compact, typically under a quarter-acre.
Farrington's Grove's more modest properties, some in need of extensive repairs tend to fall between $60,000 and $150,000. Streets are shaded by tall trees, some of which were planted during the early days of the neighborhood, and cars park in detached garages at the end of long driveways. Volunteers come together for "Neighborhood Beautification" days twice a year, picking up trash and leaves off the streets, and the neighborhood association has previously led Holiday Home Tours during the winter season. The CAP Index Crime Score in Farrington's Grove is slightly higher than the national average of 4, resting at 5 out of 10.

Fairbanks Park activities and local museums
The City of Terre Haute has a 5-year master plan to expand its park system, focusing particular attention on paved trails near the river. The Wabash River Heritage Trail, popular among local cyclists and runners, is a few blocks from Farrington's Grove in Fairbanks Park. Also found within the park is the Vigo County YMCA, where kids can attend after-school enrichment programs. The Banks of the Wabash Festival, held by the river each May, ushers in the summer season with live music and carnival games. Considering its relatively small size — Terre Haute has a population of just under 60,000 — there's also an impressive variety of museums. Candles Holocaust Museum and Education Center, for instance, is open to the public Thursday through Saturday, and the Children's Museum of Terre Haute focuses on STEM education. In the summertime, residents set up lawn chairs in The Mill Amphitheater to listen to live bands.

New industries and public transportation
Although Terre Haute has lost some of its more important industries in recent decades — Pfizer, for instance, moved out in 2008 — the city has also seen new businesses move in. "The population hasn't grown. If anything, it's slightly declined as of late," explains Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Realtor Andrew Southard, adding that there's still a resurgence in the form of an Eastside Casino and ENTEK Battery, which both add up to multi-billion-dollar investments. Other major employers include Union Hospital, a 275-bed facility just north of downtown and the various local universities. Although public transportation is still somewhat limited within the city, there are six fixed daytime routes, and one stops regularly along South 7th Street in Farrington's Grove. Indianapolis and its international airport, from which most residents book their commercial flights, are accessible via Interstate 70.
