Single-family homes, barbeque and football stadiums in Terre Haute
The sauce is famous at Rick's Smokehouse & Grill, found along Wabash Avenue in the Terre Haute neighborhood of Fenwood. Located approximately 2 miles from Downtown, this roadside barbeque joint, which first opened back in 2008, has attracted a long list of regulars in the nearly two decades since opening. "They get busy around lunchtime, so you have to plan ahead," says Cy Marlow, who founded LJ Michaels Inc., a Terre Haute-based real estate firm, over 30 years ago. "They make their own sauce. The recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, it's not something you can find in a cookbook," he adds. To the north, neighborhood streets are populated with century-old homes, some painted in pastel yellows and blues, and residents park their pickup trucks or small motorboats in their narrow driveways. "Fenwood has very nice sidewalks and it's close to a safe walking trail where you can walk and ride bicycles." The neighborhood has a 5 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, one point higher than the national average of 4. Also nearby is Indiana State University's Memorial Stadium, where the Sycamores take on other Division I football teams during the fall; and for many Fenwood fans, Friday night lights are a walk away.
Early 20th-century homes on compact lots
Homes in Fenwood are concentrated in the northern half of the neighborhood, many of which were built between 1900 and 1925. Architectural styles are reflective of this time period and there are bungalows, traditional cottages with front porches and Foursquares with quaint dormer windows. Prospective buyers will also find modest 1950s ranch-style homes to choose from. "It's a mixed character as far as design," notes Marlow, adding, "The home I own is South Western Spanish style, but there are modern homes and there are two story options." Sale prices depend on the condition, and investment properties can sometimes sell for less than $50,000. Newly updated homes, meanwhile, often range from around $100,000 to $150,000 in price. Lot sizes in Fenwood are relatively compact, just over 5,000 square feet on average, and attached garages are few and far between. Properties here are often picked up quickly, weeks faster than the national average. "We are in somewhat of a housing shortage," says local Realtor Andrew Southard of Berkshire Hathaway. "We need more homes to be built. We're probably two months' worth of supply. Thrive is a company that's giving out some grant money to builders, and we're looking to add more single-family homes, duplexes and townhomes to the city."
Prices can start under 50,000 dollars and go up to between 100,000 and 150,000 dollars.

Fast casual eateries along Wabash Avenue and groceries at Kroger
Wabash Avenue, the neighborhood's southernmost border, is lined with an assortment of fast-food chains: there's a McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell and more. Rick's is the go-to for barbeque, and families can sit down for meals at Babo's Cafe, which opens at 7 a.m. for breakfast and serves American staples alongside authentic Balkan dishes like Uštipci, or fried dough. Many Fenwood residents can reach Kroger on foot, and upscale restaurants like Stables Steakhouse are closer to Downtown. As some locals like to say, out-of-towners first come for the slot machines—the Terre Haute Casino Resort is a new addition to the city that's resulted in a sizeable economic boost—but return for the ribeyes and filet mignon at Stables.

The National Road Heritage Trail and disc golf in Deming Park
According to Southard, Terre Haute is home to an extensive—and growing—network of paved walking paths; the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has invested several million in grant money to add even more mileage to the trail system. Rollerbladers, dog walkers and joggers can also travel between the Rose-Hulman Insitute of Technology and ISU's campus along the National Road Heritage Trail, which is over 6 miles long. A section of this trail passes through Centennial Park, which also features picnic shelters and benches on Fenwood's northwest corner. Farther south, Ohio Boulevard's grassy median ends in Deming Park, a 175-acre expanse where locals will find an 18-hole disc golf course, playground, community center and even a small train called "The Spirit of Terre Haute," which mainly operates during the summer months.
Fine arts and dual credit at Terre Haute North Vigo High School
Fenwood students can attend Vigo County Public Schools like Benjamin Franklin Elementary, about a mile from the neighborhood next to the National Road Heritage Trail, and Woodrow Wilson Junior High, a mile south. The schools received a C and C-plus from Niche, respectively. The last stop on the public school pipeline is Terre Haute North Vigo High, which has a B-minus Niche grade and a robust fine arts program, including classes like Dance Performance and Theater Arts. Upperclassmen can also pursue dual credit opportunities through Indiana State University. Marlow, an ISU alumnus, speaks to the college's influence on the larger city of Terre Haute, noting, "I have nothing but accolades to say about the campus and faculty."
Woodrow Wilson Middle School got a B- in the teachers department from Niche.

A Poplar Street farmers market and events in Deming Park
On Saturday mornings between May and October, vendors selling everything from body scrubs to microgreens set up for the Terre Haute Farmers Market along Poplar Street; in the winter, the market's held out of Meadows Shopping Center. Deming Park also hosts several events throughout the year. There's Christmas in the Park, during which the Spirit of Terre Haute train usually makes an appearance, and "Haunted Halloween" in October, a festival that includes hayrides and free games. Downtown attractions include the Children's Museum, the Hulman Center—home to ISU's Division I basketball team—and the Swope Art Museum.
Kroger bus stops, Interstate 70 to Indianapolis
Most residents will use their own cars to travel between Terre Haute neighborhoods, but there's also the East Wabash/ East Locust bus line, part of Terre Haute's public transit system; fares are $1.75, and it carries commuters all the way to Indiana State University. Union Hospital, just over 2 miles from the neighborhood, is also one of the city's largest employers. Drivers can travel along Interstate 70 to reach Indianapolis, 75 miles away. The capital city's population is over 15 times the size of Terre Haute's, and it also has an international airport with close to 50 nonstop travel options.
