Community gathering spaces and resource hubs in Liberty Avenue
Liberty Avenue is one of Terre Haute’s oldest urban neighborhoods, not far from shops and restaurants on Wabash Avenue. Today, local houses of worship and community centers serve as gathering spaces and resource hubs for Wabash Valley residents. “It’s a pretty low-income part of Terre Haute, and you’re likely to find just about any kind of people or family living there,” she says community organizer Susan Seitz, co-founder of Manna from Seven, a nonprofit that helps support hundreds of families in the area. “We provide free haircuts once a month and laundry once a week. Having a little confidence goes a long way.” New development is also spurring confidence: A $14.5 million, 42-unit affordable housing complex recently opened near Liberty Avenue. An attached emergency housing shelter called the Lotus Center will temporarily house 52 people. The new development joins Liberty Village, another affordable housing complex in the area geared toward veterans and their families.

Low-cost homes built in the early 20th century
Liberty Avenue reflects the area history with bungalows, cottages and American foursquares built in the mid-to-late 1800s to the early 20th century. Many streets were planned before cars, so the neighborhood’s compact lots leave little room for driveways or garages; street parking is standard for most of the community. More than two-thirds of residents rent. For homebuyers and investors, rehab properties and fixer-uppers can cost between $20,000 and $60,000, while small move-in-ready homes range from $60,000 to $120,000. Larger, often fully renovated homes are scarce but can cost between $100,000 and $210,000.

Dining options in downtown Terre Haute
Wabash Avenue offers a mix of dining options, with local bars and restaurants clustered toward downtown, plus chain establishments on the eastern end. “There are places along Wabash Avenue like Saratoga, which is a family-owned restaurant that’s been around for years and years,” Seitz says. “There’s also Federal Coffee, which is a really good place to go for coffee, snacks and sandwiches.” Located in a 100-year-old Beaux-Arts building, the historic Terminal Public House retains original elements from its days as a train station, including Brazil Clay Company tiles and vintage bathroom sinks. Sonka Irish Pub is popular among students and locals for its craft beer and classic pub grub, while Wise Pies serves New York-style pizza by the slice. Kroger is the nearest grocery store.

Year-round play at Deming Park and downtown attractions
Family-friendly green space within the community may besparse, but some of the city’s beloved parks are within a few miles. Collett Park, one of Terre Haute’s oldest parks, dates back to 1883. Bikers can hop on the National Road Heritage Trail at Centennial Park, and Deming Park is popular all year long. “There’s a small train that runs through there and some really nice play equipment. If there’s snow, it’s a good place to go sledding,” Seitz says. Downtown Terre Haute has attractions like the Terre Haute Children’s Museum, Swope Art Museum and several art galleries. Basketball fans can cheer on the Indiana State Sycamores at the Hulman Center, which also hosts concerts and other events.
