Less than 2 miles to Collett Park and downtown Terre Haute

Collett Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features centuries-old trees and expansive green space. Dedicated in 1883, it now offers a playground and tennis courts. Farther south, Coy Park includes a playground, half a basketball court and wide-open green areas. Downtown attractions like the Swope Art Museum and the Terre Haute Children’s Museum are 3 miles away.

Slightly west of the neighborhood, the Wabash River offers boat ramps and fishing. “But it’s extremely difficult to navigate," says Carrie Smith, a Terre Haute resident and Realtor with Gibson Real Estate. "I think only DNR (Department of Natural Resources) or people who know what they’re doing should be on there.”

Kids can earn college credit, then head to nearby ISU

Kids may attend Terre Town Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche, before heading to Otter Creek Middle School, rated C, and Terre Haute North Vigo High School, rated B. High schoolers can choose from 34 career path programs to earn college credit and industry certifications.

Three miles away, Indiana State University offers more than 100 undergraduate majors. “I’ve been here 40 years and shown several houses to students’ parents,” says Cy Marlow, a Terre Haute native and owner of L.J. Michaels Inc. “They’ll buy a house and have their kids live there with roommates to cover the mortgage, then sell the house after graduation.” ISU is known especially for its college of education. In fact, during the school's early days, its athletes were called the “Fighting Teachers.” Terre Haute is also home to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and a branch of Ivy Tech Community College.

Train traffic is a part of life in Terre Haute

Residents are a 3-mile drive from downtown Terre Haute, Indiana State University and Union Hospital, two of the city’s largest employers. Most residents rely on cars to get around town, but there are Terre Haute Transit bus stops at the North Plaza shopping center. The service became fare-free in 2025. Life in Terre Haute means competing with train traffic, although many residents grow accustomed to the railroad schedule and rely on alternative routes.
