Sugar Grove-Indian Acres
Midcentury homes and established subdivisions
The area has a mix of midcentury ranch-style homes, cottages and bungalows on residential streets as well as subdivisions with new traditional and Colonial-inspired houses built in the 1980s and ’90s. Lot sizes are larger on the east side, and mature trees provide plenty of shade. Fixer-uppers can cost between $50,000 and $100,000, while small two- or three-bedroom homes range from $100,000 to $150,000. Homes on larger lots or in subdivisions tend to cost more, typically between $150,000 and $250,000.U.S. Route 41 has new grocery stores
Bev’s Restaurant blends into the residential landscape just north of the neighborhood, pulling in regulars for homestyle breakfast and homemade pies. Down the street, a thousand guitars line the walls of Music Shoppe, a 50-year Terre Haute institution whose past customers include Paul McCartney, Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton. Over the past few years, U.S. Route 40 has developed into a shopping hub with fast-food restaurants and grocery stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, Aldi and Meijer. Cultivate Farmstead, another new addition, is an organic produce farm on Margaret Avenue. Aspiring green thumbs can take classes at the farm and learn skills like seasonal gardening and composting. For more dining options, downtown Terre Haute is less than 3 miles away, and U.S. Route 41 has even more stores and restaurants.Sugar Grove Elementary School is within walking distance
Many students can walk to Sugar Grove Elementary School, which receives a B-minus from Niche. Kids may attend Honey Creek Middle School, C, or Woodrow Wilson Middle School, C-plus. High schoolers at B-rated Terre Haute South Vigo High School can take astronomy classes and study the stars at the Gibson Allen Memorial Planetarium on campus. The school district also offers college credit and industry certifications for 34 different career pathways, including advanced manufacturing, early childhood education, radio and television. Bible Baptist Academy offers faith-based education to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.Pickleball at Brittlebank Park
In 2023, Brittlebank Park underwent several upgrades in the heart of the neighborhood, including a modern playground, improved bathrooms and a new basketball court. Six new pickleball courts were also installed, bringing the total to 12. Bikers can hop on a paved trail on Hulman Drive, and golfers need only drive 10 minutes to get to Rea Park Golf Course or the members-only Sycamore Golf Club. A large playground, pavilions, picnic tables and a fishing pond make Dobbs Park a popular spot all year long, even during winter when its sledding hill comes into play. The park is also home to a nature center that hosts education programs and events. Terre Haute Casino Resort, a new attraction that opened in 2024, is less than 10 minutes away.Locals skip train traffic on the Margaret Avenue overpass
Sidewalks line main roads like Wallace Avenue and 25th Street, making the walk to elementary school easier for kids. Terre Haute Transit bus stops are scattered in the area, but most people drive. A CSX railyard west of 19th Street doesn’t contribute to noise, but regular train traffic can cause backups; however, locals know to take the Margaret Avenue overpass to avoid delays. U.S. Route 40 and Interstate 70 are about 3 miles east, while Indiana State University and Union Hospital are roughly 3 miles west. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is about 5 miles away.Houses of worship in the area
Several churches are nearby, including Eastside Baptist Church, Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Terre Haute.
