Tecumseh is a wooded escape with access to coveted schools
Tecumseh is a quiet, residential enclave nestled among dense trees on the west side of Terre Haute and the Wabash River. Named after Shawnee leader Tecumseh, the community is a popular choice for families looking for a school system with small class sizes. “Tecumseh has just a few houses, but West Terre Haute has smaller schools,” says Jeff Michalic, the owner and managing broker of Mossy Oak Properties Indiana Land and Lifestyle, who has 13 years of experience in the area. Tecumseh also receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, the lowest possible score.

Rural homes and established subdivisions
The area has a mix of rural homes on winding country roads and houses in more established areas. Large, tree-studded lots are a hallmark of the community. “It has a few newer houses with some really nice homes and subdivisions like Krislynn Woods and the Miller subdivision,” Michalic says. Midcentury Craftsman-style and ranch-style homes are common, but buyers can also find new traditional and split-level designs. Small houses in need of repair can cost between $20,000 and $120,000, but most homes cost between $200,000 and $420,000, depending on size, age and condition. Krislynn Woods has a $25 monthly HOA fee that goes toward amenities like the community park and tennis courts.

Smaller class sizes at West Vigo schools
Vigo County School Corporation enrolls nearly 14,000 students, but schools on the west side of the county are smaller, which appeals to many parents. “It’s hard to find housing because people want their kids to be in that smaller school system,” Michalic says. Kids may attend Fayette Elementary School, which receives a B from Niche, before heading to West Vigo Middle School, rated C-minus, and West Vigo High School, rated C-plus. West Vigo High has fewer than 550 students — about one-third the size of high schools on the north and south side of the county. Students at West Vigo High can also earn college credit and industry credentials on 34 career pathways, including engineering, radio and television, and precision machining.

Fishing and hunting in the Wabash Valley
Once the state’s busiest “highway” thanks to the Wabash and Erie canals, the Wabash River is now a popular spot for outdoor recreation. Anglers flock to the river via the Michael Hunter Kearns Public Access Site, casting lines from boats or the banks to catch bass, catfish and sauger.Hunting is a favorite activity in the area, with many people buying or leasing land, or arranging to hunt on local property. Game processors are available in Terre Haute and Clinton, and Coal Creek Sporting Clays provides trap and clay shooting for those looking to hone their skills. Terre Haute has more parks and playgrounds.

Tecumseh Tavern patrons enjoy cold drinks and warm conversations
Tecumseh’s remote location means most residents head to Terre Haute for shopping and dining, though there are a few local spots to enjoy. Tecumseh Tavern offers pizza, wings and drinks, making it a favorite after-work hangout for locals to unwind, play cards, and chat. The Sycamore Winery, with its 60-acre venue, serves wine slushies and hosts events like an adult Easter egg hunt and Fourth of July fireworks. For a seasonal outing, Jolly Pines Tree Farm offers more than just Christmas trees: It also features pick-your-own flowers and a pumpkin patch. For everyday needs, Kirby Foods is the closest grocery store, about 8 miles south, and Terre Haute offers a wide range of options 9 miles away on the other side of the river.
Don't miss Tecumseh Tavern, one of the only places nearby to get a bite to eat and a drink.

Possibility of flooding and tornadoes
State Route 63 is the main artery that connects Tecumseh to the employment and resource hubs of Clinton and Terre Haute. The closest emergency room is at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. While Tecumseh itself is not in a flood zone, it borders a FEMA-designated flood hazard area east of the river. The last major flood in the region occurred in 2008. Tornadoes are also a risk. An F1 tornado hit New Goshen in April 2025, damaging several homes.
