Century-old housing and a brand-new concert venue by the Wabash River
On summer nights, concert-goers bring folding chairs to The Mill, Terre Haute’s newest performance venue. Since it opened in 2021, the outdoor stage has attracted thousands of music fans to the banks of the Wabash River. “The Mill is a definite plus to Terre Haute,” says lifelong resident and Gibson Real Estate Realtor, Laura Hudson. “The Steve Miller Band was here, there’s been country music, rap stars, you name it.” Directly across Prairieton Road from The Mill is the 17-acre Voorhees Park and the residential neighborhood of the same name, where early 20th century homes occupy gridded lots. U.S. Highway 41 serves as the neighborhood’s easternmost border and is lined with chain restaurants, motels and used car dealerships. The Wabash River is this community's watery eastern edge, and Interstate 70 runs to the south of Voorhees Park, offering direct passage to Indianapolis, 75 miles away.
Pre-World War I cottages on compact lots
As is the case in many of the neighborhoods closest to downtown Terre Haute, homes in the Voorhees Park area date back to the early 1900s. Prospective buyers will find modest bungalows with pitched roofs or dormer windows, on small lot sizes — most fall under 6,000 square feet. Although there’s the occasional attached garage, detached garages are by and large the standard, and sales prices range from around $70,000 for investment properties up to $200,000 for the neighborhood’s recently renovated homes. “I know as Realtors, we always talk about housing prices, but the cost of living here is relatively low compared to any other location,” says Hudson, providing context to the overall lifestyle in Terre Haute, noting that for her it’s one of the main draws. Voorhees Park’s CAP Index Crime Score is a 6 out of 10, which is slightly higher than the national average of 4.

Highway 41 dining and Haute City Center shopping
Shopping and dining in the neighborhood are primarily concentrated along Highway 41, where residents will find plenty of fast-casual options. Chain restaurants include Texas Roadhouse and IHOP, and Umi Grill is a favorite for sushi. Haute City Center, an indoor shopping mall with over 50 retailers, is located directly south of Interstate 70. The Vigo County Fairgrounds, where families enjoy carnival rides, food vendors and exotic pet shows for one week each July, are also nearby. Groceries are available at Sam’s Club or the Fresh Thyme Market.

Skate parks, pools and riverfront festivals
“One thing I love about Terre Haute is all the parks,” says Hudson. Voorhees Park, which shares a name with the neighborhood, is a popular destination among local skateboarders. It’s also home to the Vigo County School Corporation’s Aquatic Center, an indoor swimming pool used for lessons and competitions. Across the street is The Mill — and while this music venue can hold close to 7,000 music fans, Hudson reiterates that “You can still get in and out really quickly” after a concert. Fairbanks Park, which hosts the Banks of the Wabash Festival every May, is a short bike ride north. The city plans to continue expansion of its parks system — with a special focus on its network of trails and boardwalks. This work will take the form of a 5-year master plan, which is set for completion in 2029.

CTE programs within the Vigo County School System and collegiate influence
Beginning in prekindergarten, students can attend Farrington Grove Elementary School, which, for some, is within walking distance and is located in the neighboring historic district. In sixth grade, students move on to Sarah Scott Middle. Both the elementary and middle schools here earn C grades from Niche. Terre Haute South Vigo High School receives a B grade and Career and Technical Education courses include everything from advanced nutrition and wellness to animal science. The high school’s attached planetarium is frequented by local field trip groups and is open to community members on the weekends. Terre Haute is also home to several colleges: Indiana State University, St. Mary’s, Ivy Tech and Rose-Hulman. “It’s always nice to have a college in your town,” says Hudson. “It lends to people staying around. As a Realtor, I hear people say they moved to Terre Haute to go to school, and they stayed. They liked the town so much that they stayed. Or they met someone, and they stayed.”
The Honey Creek Mall route toward downtown
Those who call Voorhees Park home can utilize Terre Haute’s public bus system. More specifically, the Honey Creek Mall bus stops in the neighborhood on its way downtown, less than 3 miles away. Depending on traffic, it will typically take about an hour and 15 minutes to drive the 75 miles to Indianapolis by way of Interstate 70. Bloomington, meanwhile, is 60 miles from Terre Haute and Voorhees Park by way of I-70 and Indiana State Route 46. Most residents will book commercial flights from the Indianapolis International Airport, and Union Hospital borders downtown Terre Haute to the north. Others seek medical care at the smaller Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
