Woodridge Park
Single-family homes under the trees
Ramblers from the middle of the 20th century are the common housing style across this neighborhood and often feature brick or painted-brick facades. Attached single-stall garages are also the norm and usually come with space for storing lawn and garden tools, which are useful in tending to lots that range from a half-acre to an acre in size. Housing prices here range from $150,000 to $300,000, and those on the bottom edge of the neighborhood back up to parkland, preventing further development in their backyards. The average home value in Woodridge Park is $283,000 which is over twice the cost of homes in downtown Terre Haute. Properties here also sell faster than the national average, often after 38 days on the market, which demonstrates the community's desirability.Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology offers top-tier undergraduate education
Public school students in Woodridge Park start at Lost Creek Elementary, graded a B-plus by Niche, before moving up to Woodrow Wilson Middle School, which is rated a C-plus by the site. Terre Haute North Vigo High School – usually just called Terre Haute North – earns a B-minus and has 21 varsity sports teams, including boys’ wrestling and girls’ dance teams. The city is home to Indiana State University for further education and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, which is just a mile east of the neighborhood. “They’ve actually been ranked for the last 24 years as the best undergraduate engineering school in the country,” says Josh Alsip, Director of Community Engagement with the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, referring to the rankings of U.S. News and World Report. “Rose-Hulman is breaking ground on a project that will be a new innovation hub… they’re partnering with the Indiana Joint Replacement Institute, working on development and innovation in a partnership.”Convenient roadways
Terre Haute has a bus system, but it’s limited. Woodridge Park has no stops on the system, and residents are car dependent. Route 40 is accessible from the neighborhood and runs east into Indiana and south where it connects with Interstate 70. Wabash Avenue runs along the northern side of this community and takes commuters directly into the heart of town. The 4-mile drive usually takes 10 to 15 minutes and is the easiest route to the nearest 24-hour emergency care center, Union Hospital. Terre Haute Regional Airport is home to private aircraft only, so residents must make the 64-mile trip to Indianapolis International Airport for commercial flights.A pair of parks for sport and outdoor enjoyment
Somewhat surprisingly, there are no parks in Woodridge Park. However, just south, Dobbs Park and Deming Park are connected by a trail for walking or biking. The former is home to the Dobbs Park Nature Center and the Native American Museum and is focused primarily on the natural spaces and history of the region. Deming, meanwhile, is home to the Deming Park Disc Golf Course – constructed in 1984, it is one of the oldest in the state. Along the walkable paths are tennis courts, a basketball court, a holly arboretum and the Torner Community Center.Long-time community favorites shine
As residents head into the city along Wabash Avenue for work, they can swing by Java Haute for a morning pick-me-up and a pastry or breakfast quiche. The coffee house has been part of the community since 2001. Just next door, family-owned Logan’s Rib-Eye has served steakhouse specialties since 2005. Residents who want to cook at home head a half mile down Wabash to Kroger or to Baesler’s Market on Poplar. Sharing a parking lot with Sycamore Ace Hardware, Baesler’s is a community staple that dates back to 1894 – the fourth and fifth generations of the Baesler family are currently at the helm.Speed across the land and skies
“There are a lot of events that happen here in Terre Haute, the Balloon Festival is a great one,” says Alsip. While locals don’t fly in and out of the Terre Haute Airport, plenty flock to the annual Terre Haute Air Show in June, with the Blue Angels putting on a demonstration overhead. For going fast on the ground, Wabash Valley Dragway and the Terre Haute Action Track, a famed half-mile dirt track, put on regular events at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are home to the week-long Vigo County Fair in July. Usually occurring on one of the adjacent weekends, the Frontier Day Parade brings the town out to celebrate the region's frontier past with a parade displaying horsemanship and Western sports.Houses of worship are community cornerstones
Terre Haute is home to several congregations, and Woodridge Park itself is home to the World Gospel Church, which has weekly services and weeknight events. According to Sharon Heath, the church office manager, the church is interdenominational and has been part of the community for almost 70 years. Central Christian Church is right across the street, while Terre Haute First Baptist is a little over a mile south, just a few of the many houses of worship found across the city.
