The Louisiana Gumbo Festival of Chackbay
Chackbay might be a rural area, but during October’s Louisiana Gumbo Festival, things heat to a boil in this town 7 miles north of Thibodaux. Over 15,000 celebrants participate in the festivities, nearly tripling the year-round population. When gumbo fever isn’t cranking up the volume, residents enjoy the perks of living in an area where they can spread out and breathe the fresh air. Most of Chackbay “is unrestricted land, and a lot of people like that — not being in any kind of HOA,” says Kelli Guidry, broker associate with Real Broker. “It’s that small town rural feel, but still a short distance from the big city.”

Crowds of smiling neighbors fill the fairgrounds off Firefighter Lane to celebrate their local heritage and enjoy the cuisine that distinguishes the Bayou Region. Proceeds support the Chackbay Volunteer Fire Department.

Casting off on Bayou Chevreuil
Fishing is more a way of life than a pastime in Lafourche Parish. Chackbay residents can set off in their boats from the Bayou Chevreuil Boat Launch or cast their lines right from the nearby fishing pier, both on the northeastern edge of town near South Vacherie. The Grand Bayou Boat Launch on Highway 20 is more centrally located and may be a more convenient option.
