Variety of homes dotting rural landscape
Driving around Chackbay reveals a potpourri of housing styles. Open fields spread out on either side of the highway, dotted here and there with ranch-style homes, bungalows and farmhouses. Narrow lanes branch off the main road, often leading to densely wooded properties. Most homes have several acres of land, but smaller lots are available. Mobile homes and brick ranch-style houses typically sell for $100,000 to $250,000. Subdivisions like The Settlement at Live Oak feature contemporary brick builds priced at $250,000 to $400,000 and amenities like a community pool, but HOA fees apply. Modern custom builds in subdivisions like The Settlement at Live Oak cost between $250,000 and $400,000. Homes don’t go up for sale very often in Chackbay, and when they do, they tend to stay on the market for over 90 days, more than twice the national average. The area also has a very low crime score.Casting off on Bayou Chevreuil
Fishing is more a way of life than a pastime in Lafourche Parish. Chackbay residents can set off in their boats from the Bayou Chevreuil Boat Launch or cast their lines right from the nearby fishing pier, both on the northeastern edge of town near South Vacherie. The Grand Bayou Boat Launch on Highway 20 is more centrally located and may be a more convenient option.A new building for Chackbay Elementary School
Students start at Chackbay Elementary School, situated in a pastoral location off Highway 20. The school moved to this new building in 2018 and earns an A-minus from Niche. Sixth Ward Middle School, which also gets an A-minus, is next. Then it’s on to Thibodaux High School, which has a Niche grade of B-minus. Both the middle and high schools are a 15- to 20-minute drive from Chackbay.Gallons of gumbo in October
The Louisiana Gumbo Festival of Chackbay has drawn revelers to the area for over half a century. Held on the second weekend of October, the three-day event features amusement rides, live music, a parade and plenty of Cajun specialties, including gallons of gumbo. Crowds of smiling neighbors fill the fairgrounds off Firefighter Lane to celebrate their local heritage and enjoy the cuisine that distinguishes the Bayou Region. Proceeds support the Chackbay Volunteer Fire Department.Traveling to Thibodaux
While the Thibodaux region has a public bus system, it doesn’t operate this far outside the city. Most people commute to Thibodaux, 7 miles away, or Houma, 23 miles south, via Louisiana Highway 20. Highway 3127 is about 5 miles north and provides the best route to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, 45 miles away.Dive bars and Dollar General
Aside from a couple of Dollar General discount stores, there aren’t any places to shop in Chackbay. As a rule, residents make the 7-mile drive to Thibodaux for the basics. Before heading out of town, they can fuel up at Nocko’s Discount gas station or GoBears Chevron convenience store and grab a glazed yeast donut from Tasty Cream Donuts. About 6 miles down Highway 20, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Walmart Supercenter mark the outskirts of downtown Thibodaux, where more shops and restaurants await. On the subject of dining out, Chackbay does have a few roadhouses where folks can grab a drink or a quick bite. Da Old Swamp Shack and Harvey’s Cypress Inn are tucked into the curve of Highway 20 on the eastern side of town toward South Vacherie. M2 (Squared) Down Da Road is another roadside bar offering darts, pool, and ice-cold daiquiris.Flood risk in Chackbay
