Named for the Native American nation that settled in Louisiana in the mid-1700s, Choctaw rests in the Bayou Region north of Thibodaux. Today, swampland and sugarcane fields surround the area, crisscrossed by streams and bayous. With a population of just 1,500, the community is small yet loyal to the land they call home. “Everybody knows each other, everybody’s here to help each other out,” says Luticia Cortez, branch manager for Lafourche Parish Public Library’s Choctaw branch. Along with the Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department, the library serves as a touchstone for the community. “We’re like a central hub for events going on. We get the information out to the people,” Cortez says.

Mobile and ranch-style homes
Choctaw Road is the main artery through the town that shares its name. Only a few side streets meander away from its path. Trees and open fields punctuated by mobile and ranch-style homes border the narrow two-lane road, which has almost no shoulder on either side. “These towns north of Thibodaux — Choctaw, Chackbay — they’re not big cities. They’re not even medium-sized cities,” says Chris Singleton, an instructor at Thibodaux’s Nicholls State University. “When you look at it, it’s just really swamp area.” The property mix is dominated by residential houses, so other styles pop up here and there. However, vacant lots and investment properties make up the bulk of available inventory, which is generally low. Current prices for land and homes range from $75,000 to $150,000.

Choctaw Fireman’s Fair
Every March, the Choctaw Volunteer Fire Department hosts a three-day celebration with live music, amusement rides, Cajun delicacies and a live auction, all capped off with a parade. The last Saturday in September, the Choctaw Fall Bash features a car show, cook-off and cornhole tournament. As with the Fireman’s Fair, proceeds benefit the local fire department. Choctaw is also 8 miles from Chackbay, another small town and home of October’s Louisiana Gumbo Festival.

Hurricane season in Bayou Region
Hurricane season runs from June through November and affects all residents in the Bayou Region. Hurricane Ida devastated Choctaw in 2021, and many residents are still struggling to rebuild their homes. Wind damage is more of a concern than flood risk, which isn’t as high as in neighboring towns like Houma and Chauvin.
