Growing community on Bayou Lafourche

Named for a Civil War battle that erupted on the banks of Bayou Lafourche, Lafourche Crossing is home to a small yet growing community 4 miles south of Thibodaux. The eponymous bayou — nicknamed the “longest Main Street in the world” due to the 65 miles of communities lining its banks — flows through the area, with Louisiana Highway 1 running alongside it. Like the Acadian settlers who established the Cajun fishing communities in the mid-18th century, homebuyers are drawn to Lafourche Crossing for of its favorable location. “If you look at the palm of your hand, Thibodaux is the palm itself, then you have the outlying towns feeding into it,” says Danielle Stein, executive director for Thibodaux Main Street, Inc. “We’re almost out of space within the city limits, so there’s been a lot of development right outside the city.”

Brick contemporary homes with spacious lawns

Nearly all properties in Lafourche Crossing are residential homes on streets branching off Highway 1. Most are brick contemporary builds featuring spacious yards, attached garages and paved driveways with enough space to set up basketball hoops. Mobile homes and ranch-style houses with shaded carports line the older residential streets, which offer more tree growth than the lots with new construction. Homes in the area typically sell for $125,000 to $400,000. Across the northeastern side of Bayou Lafourche, the Chatchie Plantation House stands as a historical landmark. Larger plantation-style homes like this one sit well back from the road on rolling green lawns. They don’t enter the market often, but current prices range from $600,000 to $700,000.
