Neighborhood between two parishes

Ridgefield Heights sits between two parishes in Thibodaux. “Your front yard is considered Lafourche Parish, your backyard is considered Terrebonne,” says Leslie Boudreaux, a Realtor with Century 21 Action Realty who grew up in the neighborhood. When he owned a home here, this border led to his utility services being split between the two parishes – his water was provided by Thibodaux, and his trash was through Terrebonne. The area has changed a lot since Boudreaux was a kid. “It used to be a dead-end road years ago,” he says. “The Walmart used to be a drive-in theater. My grandpa used to own pretty much the whole street.” Over time, the community morphed into the commercial and residential blend that stands today, with Canal Boulevard connecting it to Downtown Thibodaux, about 2 miles away.

Homes under $250,000

Stately oaks and towering cypress trees dot the grassy lawns that extend to the streets, offering shady respites from the Louisiana sun. Driveways branch off thin roads, leading to carports and one-car garages. There are several multi-generational homes, with one or two bedrooms separated from the rest. Bungalows, cottages and ranch styles from the mid-20th century comprise most of the neighborhood. Most prices for a three-to-four-bedroom range from $150,000 to $250,000. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) says Ridgefield Heights has a relatively high risk of hurricanes. Flood insurance is recommended for all homeowners and required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage.

Schriever Elementary School offers pre-kindergarten through third grade, while fourth through sixth grade are at Caldwell Middle School. Evergreen Junior High School serves seventh and eighth grades. All three schools receive a B from Niche. At the B-plus-rated H. L. Bourgeois High School, students can join extracurricular activities such as color guard or the JAG Career Association. Nicholls State University is about 2 miles away and offers dual enrollment to high schoolers in Terrebonne Parish. It also has 28 degree programs. “You have a lot of people who go for nursing, and there’s a great culinary program there,” Boudreaux says.

Thibodaux Mardi Gras celebrations

Like many parts of Louisiana, Thibodaux takes Mardi Gras festivities seriously. The largest celebration is the Thibodaux Parade, which dates to the late 19th century. “We’ve got 50-something floats,” Boudreaux says. “I mean, people say, ‘You’re going to Mardi Gras?’ and I say, 'Yeah.' Then they say, ‘You going to New Orleans?’ and I say, ‘Oh, no!' ” Colorful floats ride through the streets, interspersed with dance groups and marching bands. Food and craft vendors line the parade route, serving Cajun classics like red beans and rice and jambalaya. There is also king cake, but that gets a celebration of its own. In 2024, the Louisiana King Cake Festival held in Thibodaux served over 19,000 slices of king cake during Mardi Gras. The cakes hailed from several of the best local bakeries in South Louisiana. Festival attendees can play games and enjoy live music in between their taste tests. The event raises money for Lafourche Parish Public Schools.
