The westernmost of two Thornbury Townships in southeastern Pennsylvania
The neighborhood of Thornbury sprawls southward off East Street Road in Pennsylvania, less than 10 miles away from West Chester. “Thornbury is a tiny little blip on the map,” says Alison Maguire, the co-owner of the Moore Maguire Real Estate Group of Keller Williams Realty. “It’s like an older, turn-of-the-century town and mostly residential. It has closer proximity to Delaware County and some major routes like Route 1, which takes you down towards the city, the airport or just more densely populated areas.”
Part of the larger Thornbury Township, but not the “other” Thornbury Township that borders it to the east, the neighborhood has historic sites with ties to the American Revolution. The dual townships that share a name sit in separate counties, and the division came about in 1789 after conflicts over the location of the county seat. Today, the western Thornbury Township is a scenic suburb with a topography of woods, rolling hills and subdivisions scattered across what was formerly farmland.
An array of single-family homes and townhouses
Thornbury is primarily comprised of looping residential streets, though the neighborhood expands into some farmland at either end. “It’s mostly just residential,” Maguire says. “The whole township is pretty wooded. There’s not a whole lot of expansive fields or anything like that.” Townhouses in Thornbury are concentrated in the western half of the neighborhood. Single-family homes are often colonial-style, Craftsman or custom designs, as well as some ranch-style homes that typically date to the 1950s. Other architectural styles typically date to the late-20th century or into the 2000s.
“There are a lot more newer-home communities that were built there in the past 50 years versus some of these other places that have been built up more in the mid-century type of style,” Maguire says. “Thornbury is more newer single-family homes from the past 20 to 30 years with bigger lots.” Single-family homes rarely cost below $800,000, and can commonly fetch up to $1 million-plus. Townhouses are often priced between $450,000 and $600,000.
A-rated schools for Thornbury students
Students can begin at one of several elementary schools in the West Chester Area School District, including Westtown-Thornbury Elementary School, which receives an A rating from Niche. Stetson Middle School also receives an A score, as does Bayard Rustin High School. Bayard Rustin spans grades nine through 12 and is noted for a prominent Science Olympiad program, which advanced to the national stage five times between 2012 and 2019. Parts of the campus of the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania also sit on the east side of Thornbury.
An expansive park with historical ties
Squire Cheyney Farm Park is the neighborhood’s largest recreational space, spanning over 50 acres on the east end of Thornbury. The park has ties to the Revolutionary War, as it was where Thomas “Squire” Cheyney helped inform General George Washington of the approach of British troops in 1777. The ensuing Battle of Brandywine is commemorated with reenactments at Sandy Hollow Heritage Park, which sits across the Thornbury neighborhood about 5 miles away. WCUSC Thornbury Soccer Park offers multiple pitches on its grounds, while Goose Creek Park visitors can gather at its pavilion, walk the trails or fish in the Chester Creek.
Shopping to the west of central Thornbury
Route 202, known locally as Wilmington Pike, runs through part of Thornbury’s western half. The thoroughfare is residents’ typical route to find restaurants, stores and more. Near the edge of Thornbury, the Westtown Village Shopping Center has the Westtown Amish Market and Gadaleto’s Seafood Market, as well as a local brunch spot in the H&L Grill. H&L Grill also hosts the Pig Roast and Chicken BBQ event once a month from May to September. Just across East Street Road, the Commons of Thornbury Shopping Center has additional retail options. Diners there can also find international fare at Taco Maya Mexican Grill West Chester or Italian food at Osteria Ama West Chester.
Down Route 202, just outside of Thornbury, residents can find groceries at a Giant store in the Shoppes of Dilworthtown Crossing. Farther south near Route 1, an AMC DINE-IN theater sits in the Village at Painters’ Crossing shopping complex. “There’s a lot of shopping right there on Route 1, so there’s a bunch of popular chain restaurants and stores there,” Maguire says.
A neighborhood removed from major roads
Along with serving as the main commercial thoroughfare, Route 202 is the most prominent road that runs through Thornbury. It passes through the west side of the neighborhood and connects to Route 3 to the north and Route 1 to the south. “There’s really good access to getting downtown or going to the airport,” Maguire says. “If someone wants to be in that area and have a West Chester address, but still have closer proximity to the city and airport, it’s a good place to live.” Both state routes run eastward to Philadelphia, about 30 miles east, and Route 1 also links to areas like Chadds Ford while accessible less than 3 miles from Thornbury. Drivers can reach West Chester to the north within about 9 miles, or Wilmington in Delaware about 15 miles south. Philadelphia International Airport is about 20 miles east.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
