The lone bull of Tigard’s East Bull Mountain

The East Bull Mountain neighborhood of Tigard scales the eastern side of its namesake, which comes from a pioneer legend. According to local settlers, a herd of cattle en route to market escaped their barge in the Tualatin River. Eventually, pioneers rounded them up, but they couldn’t capture one single bull, who grazed the mountain and thus garnered naming rights for the neighborhood.

Today, the mountain provides residents with scenic views and space from the city of Tigard. “We are kind of on a hill, so you can look out and you can see the mountain and the valley,” says Gloria Narez, the assistant temp for the Bull Mountain Heights apartment complex. “I think people come out here to find peace.” In addition to apartments, the hilly neighborhood consists of new traditional homes, maintained parks and trails, and a well-rated school system.

New traditional builds scale East Bull Mountain

Homes in East Bull Mountain gently scale the east side of the slope, peeking out onto residential streets behind freshly trimmed hedges and neat sidewalks. New traditional homes with front porches, columns and overhanging eaves reminisce of Craftsman design, though they were mostly built throughout the mid-2000s. Fetching between $630,000 and $715,000, many of these homes come with four bedrooms and monthly homeowners association fees that stay below $100. Larger new traditional estates with five bedrooms—some on lots around a third of an acre in size—range from $850,000 to $900,000, and many belong to homeowners associations with monthly fees above $100. New constructions from 2024 with modern, slanted roofs and asymmetrical designs cost between $650,000 and $700,000.

Elizabeth Price Park’s labyrinth alludes to neighborhood’s name

Several thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces are near East Bull Mountain. Circular, concrete paths lined with various vegetation form a small labyrinth at the center of Elizabeth Price Park, referencing the lost bull from the neighborhood’s name origin story. At the center of the labyrinth, an in-laid compass rests above an underground water reserve that services the neighborhood. Nearby, a seesaw, a swing set and a play set rest on a patch of mulch.

Farther north, Bull Mountain Park stretches across 10 acres of Douglas fir forest, maintained by the Friends of Bull Mountain Park, an active volunteer group. The organization created a gathering space and a play area in a small clearing at the center of the wooded park. Towering trees provide shade for a simple play set—fashioned of stacked logs of various heights—while a rustic wooden shelter with picnic tables invites gatherings and celebrations. Intricate woodland animals carved into stumps keep a watchful eye on the green space. The King City Golf Course, which surrounds a housing development south of the neighborhood, includes a nine-fairway course which navigates around sand traps and a pond.

Farmers market and more at Canterbury Square Shopping Center

Situated along Pacific Highway, Canterbury Square is home to several neighborhood restaurants, Harbor Freight Tools as well as the Bull Mountain Farmers Market. Stands with fresh produce and artisan products flood the shopping center’s parking lot every morning on Saturdays and Sundays from May through October. Nearby, Foxy’s Bar & Lounge has a seasonal cocktail menu accompanied by crispy appetizers. The nearby MoMo Thai House serves authentic Thai noodles and curry dishes in a crisp, white interior. “It’s home-owned, and it’s really beautiful, so I really recommend that one,” Narez says. Less than a mile from the neighborhood’s southern border, Grocery Outlet, Safeway and Trader Joe’s are all local grocery options.

Pacific Highway connects to Beaverton and downtown Portland

East Bull Mountain rests on a slope, west of the Pacific Highway, one of Tigard’s main thoroughfares. The highway eventually connects to the Beaverton-Tigard Highway—or Oregon state Route 217—and Interstate 5, which leads to downtown Portland. Bull Mountain Road steers off Pacific Highway, crossing the entirety of the neighborhood and the ridge of the slope.
