Summerfield offers activities and community in suburban Portland
The Portland area has several options for living an active lifestyle, but if homebuyers want all their activities in one place, it's hard to beat Summerfield, a 55-plus community in the suburb of Tigard. "They have golf, games, exercise classes, dance classes and all kinds of community events," says Terri Layton, a broker at Call it Closed International Realty with nearly 30 years of experience. "It has a social aspect. You have a community of people that are involved in daily activities, pickleball being the most recent." Homes surround the neighborhood golf course, offering views of the fairways and greens. Plus, getting to and from the city is easy thanks to nearby highways.
Single-family and multifamily units are available in Summerfield
Summerfield features a mix of townhouses, condos and single-family homes. Houses in the neighborhood are mostly New Traditional or ranch-style, usually one story with an attached garage. Homes typically sit close together on streets lined with sidewalks, with large shrubs and colorful flowers in many front yards. Despite all the amenities, prices in Summerfield tend to be lower than the rest of Tigard. Single-family homes sell for $400,000 to $680,000. Townhouses can cost between $400,000 and $750,000, while condos range from $180,000 to $370,000. Homeownership is limited to residents 55 and up; adult children may live with their parents if the kids are 18 or older. The neighborhood comes with homeowners association fees. Summerfield Civic Association is the main group for the neighborhood, but there are eight subassociations, each with its own bylaws.
Golf, swimming and tennis bring neighbors together
The Summerfield Civic Association operates most neighborhood activities. The nine-hole, par-33 golf course is open to the public, and pickleball and tennis groups play multiple times a week. The neighborhood clubhouse has a fitness center, pingpong and a pool table. Residents can cool off in the outdoor pool, which is open from May through early October. Community members are allowed to bring guests as well. The civic association also puts on several activities, like line dancing, card games and a quilting club. Outside the neighborhood, Cook Family Park is a large green space with hiking and biking trails, baseball fields, a butterfly garden and boat ramps offering access to the Tualatin River.
Tigard's shopping and dining destinations surround the neighborhood
Several shops and restaurants are just west of the neighborhood along Pacific Highway. JB O'Brien's Irish Pub is a casual spot known for its classic Irish bar food and drinks, and Mazatlan offers Mexican cuisine. "They have a new Italian restaurant, Gambino's, that's really good," Layton says. Groceries are available at Safeway and Trader Joe’s. More shopping is available east of the neighborhood at Bridgeport Village, an outdoor mall that features stores like REI, Sephora and Barnes & Noble.
Pacific Highway and Interstate 5 provide quick commutes
Pacific Highway is immediately west of the neighborhood, offering a convenient commute throughout Tigard and the greater Portland area. Interstate 5, about 3 miles east, provides another highway through the region. Downtown Portland is about a 13-mile drive, while the closest hospital, Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center, is about 5 miles away. Ride Connection is a nonprofit operating bus routes in the area. The King City Link route has stops on Durham Road and connects to King City and Tualatin.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
