Close to an active downtown
Unlike its neighbor to the south, Harlem Avenue Estates, Barrett Brothers Familyland has houses built close to one another on smaller lots. The neighborhood butts up against the railroad tracks where the Metra commuter train ventures into and from downtown Chicago. The neighborhood is also just across the railroad tracks from downtown Tinley Park. “The village does a good job of having events throughout the year, including an Irish parade in March and a farmers market in the summer along Oak Park Avenue,” says Alexandria Murphy, a Realtor with Keller Williams Preferred Realty with over five years of experience. “Another reason people like this area is the good schools.”
Solid schools
The elementary and middle schools in the neighborhood are part of the Tinley Park Community Consolidated School District Number 146. Memorial Elementary School has a 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a B overall Niche grade. Central Middle School has a B rating where students can start joining clubs and organizations such as the Girls Who Code and Pokemon clubs. Tinley Park High School is part of the Bremen Community High School District Number 228. The school is rated an A-minus on Niche and has just under 1,100 students.
Some renovations
The houses are mainly from the 1960s and ‘70s, with two to four bedrooms and up to 2500 square feet. Some have been remodeled and have at least a partial basement. Split-level, ranch-style and some Colonial Revival are seen in the neighborhood with the price range mainly from $200,000 to $400,000, and the average price per square is under $200. Condos also include a nearly $300 monthly fee for lawn care, snow removal and water expenses. Some of the older homes have detached garages. Eighty-one percent of the people in this neighborhood are homeowners.
Ease of commute
The Tinley Park Metra commuter rail station is a short drive. The express train from the station to downtown Chicago takes about 35 minutes. It’ll take a little longer for non-express routes. “There are a couple of express lines that run in the morning and the afternoon,” Murphy says. Pace Suburban Bus Service is also an option that stops on Oak Park Avenue. It’s an extensive bus system covering six suburban Chicago suburbs and over 3,700 square miles.
Good eats and drinks near the tracks
One of the more popular places for a nice dinner out is the Primal Cut Steakhouse, on the north side of the tracks on Oak Park Avenue. The restaurant offers high-quality appetizers and steaks without traveling to downtown Chicago, all in an atmosphere that is described as upscale casual. The restaurant is also known for its popular Sunday brunch. Tinley Park is also known for its breweries, and it is the only building in Tinley Park to be on the National Register of Historic Places. The 19th-century house has turned into Banging Gavel Brews and a restaurant. The grand re-opening of the historic home into its new life happened in December of 2023. Grocery shopping can occur at Jewel-Osco on Harlem Avenue, north of the tracks.
Recreation on the wood floor or the grass
It’s an old-fashioned way to exercise, and it’s been in the Tinley Park community since 1965. The Tinley Park Roller Rink is popular for birthday parties and special events. It’s open for public skating on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On all other days, the facility is open for private rental only. Jean Rauhoff Park is a corner recreation area with a mulch-floored playground with swings and a climbing structure.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
