Harlem Avenue Estates
One official park among green space
Even though there’s plenty of undeveloped land and green space, there’s only one official park in the neighborhood: Jean Rauhoff Park, a small pocket space at the corner of 177th and Sayre. Most of the park is covered by a playground with modern, colorful climbing equipment and a swing set. A park bench is on either side of the play area, and a picnic table is in the green space. A tree canopy shades the playground. For a bigger facility, Memorial School Park is east of the neighborhood, totaling about four acres with a baseball field, basketball courts and a playground.B-rated school in Harlem Avenue Estates
Central Middle School is in the Tinley Park Community Consolidated School District Number 146. Central Middle School is rated a B overall. The school’s marching band has a history of performing nationwide, playing at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida and regional festivals. Memorial Elementary School is near Memorial School Park and has a 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio, as Niche recorded. The school also gets a B grade. Tinley Park High School is part of the Bremen Community High School District Number 228 and receives an A-minus on Niche. Fox College is located on Oak Park Avenue. It is a two-year school focusing on hands-on medical training with associate degree opportunities in physical or occupational therapy assistant or veterinary technology. The housing stock is varied
Lots on Harlem and Sayre Avenues are older homes on about an acre of land. The houses are Craftsman and Cape Cod from the 1930s to the ‘50s. Split-level homes from the 1970s to the ‘90s are situated along small cul-de-sac neighborhoods off Oak Park Avenue. Condominiums built above a small shopping center about 20 years ago along 183rd Street go for around $200,000 with two bedrooms and between 1300 and 1800 square feet. In addition, a $350 monthly maintenance fee covers water, parking, snow removal and lawn care. Single-family homes range from $200,000 to $400,000 with about a 2500 square-foot median living space size. Seventy percent of the people in Harlem Avenue Estates are homeowners.Bus or train options
Pace Suburban Bus Service is one of the public transportation methods for residents. There are bus stops along Oak Park Avenue and 183rd Street. The system is one of the largest in the county, covering nearly 3,700 square miles across six suburban Chicago counties. “People also love the convenience of the Metra commuter trains at one of two Tinley Park stations,” Murphy says. “The express train from those two stations can have you in downtown Chicago in about 35 minutes.”Authentic Italian Beef
One of the staples in the Chicago food scene is the Italian beef sandwich, and one of the legendary places to get it is in the neighborhood. Al’s #1 Italian Beef prepares their sandwich by thinly slicing the beef, putting it on a French roll and sometimes double dipping it in au jus. The sandwich is often topped with hot or sweet peppers. Mr. Stacks serves breakfast, brunch and lunch. S’more and Oreo are some of the pancake flavors. Sandwiches and wraps are on the menu for lunch.
