The long-lasting community of Parkside-Bedford Park

Located in east Tinley Park, Parkside-Bedford Park is no exception in the village when it comes to generational residents. “I was raised here, and I now live 2 blocks from my parents,” says Kris Hogan, a local Realtor with Village Realty. “People move back to take care of their parents. Some even buy homes and move back from other states. Everyone here just really likes each other.” The walkable Metra station and community collaborative school district make for a convenient and well-connected neighborhood that residents cherish. “The village is constantly revamping to make itself better,” she continues. “That’s why it’s grown over all these years.”

Generational living throughout Tinley Park

Parkside-Bedford Park is sometimes referred to as “Old Tinley,” where home styles diverge from what’s usually expected in Tinley Park. “There’s not much room for new construction anymore since the area is pretty built up,” explains Alex Anderson, a local Realtor with The Apartment Source. “There are a lot of new families, but at the same time, I’ve personally witnessed the generational living in Tinley. Almost my whole family still lives there. It’s an area that people stay.” Investment properties mix with renovated split levels and ranch-style homes, neighboring classic Chicago bungalows constructed around the midcentury. Most include detached garages peeking out from behind, with paved driveways and modest lawns out front. These single-family builds range in price from around $100,000 to $400,000, about average for the area. Homebuyers won’t find many sidewalks throughout Old Tinley’s subdivisions, but residential streets have leisurely traffic, creating a safe environment for strolling and dog walking.

Central Consolidated School District 146

Students are zoned for Central Consolidated School District 146, beginning at Bert H. Fulton School. Located within walking distance of most homes in Parkside-Bedford Park, the elementary school has strong parent and community support, as evidenced by the active Parent-Teacher Organization. Several elementary schools feed into Central Middle School, the only intermediate institution in the district. Both Fulton and Central earn a grade of B on Niche. Tinley Park High School earns an A-minus, operating within Bremen Community High School District 228. “My kids went to Tinley High, and so did my siblings back in the day. All of them had a great experience because it’s so small,” Hogan says. “They made every team they tried out for. Their teachers looked out for them, so much so that I had a great personal relationship with many of the faculty members.”

A walkable Metra station for quick commutes to Chicago

The Tinley Park Metra station is less than a mile from most residences in Parkside-Bedford Park, where commuter parking is available for those opting to drive instead of walk. The 29-mile commute to Downtown Chicago is reduced to a 40-minute train ride. “I grew up walking to the train station; it’s a huge part of how we reach the city,” Hogan notes. “Everyone who works downtown tries to find a home close to the Metra.” Alternatively, drivers can expect to take Interstate 57 into the city. Chicago Midway International Airport is 16 miles north on Route 43, Harlem Avenue. Though bus stops are offered on Oak Park Avenue, residents are largely dependent on the Metra and their personal vehicles. Bike lanes are not common, either. The closest emergency room is located at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, a 6-mile drive east.

Community recreation at Tinley Park’s “Park District”

“Every time we’re in the area, the park is crowded,” Anderson says, referring to Tinley Park. Named after the community itself, locals typically refer to the green space as the “Park District,” because it houses the Parks and Recreation Department. There, an indoor playground and gymnasium are provided at the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center, along with several indoor and outdoor ball courts. Athletic fields are complimented by walking paths, an outdoor ice rink and even an accessible playground certified by the Americans with Disabilities Act. “Everyone goes to the Park District for their huge Fourth of July celebration, too. The fireworks are always amazing,” Hogan says. She also lauds the Bartel Grassland and Water Reserve, a 585-acre landscape home to native plant and bird species where community members can volunteer on restoration projects. “My brother’s yard backs up to it; you’ll see wildlife there all the time. Deer, coyotes, foxes.”

Oak Park Avenue’s craft brews and homemade ice cream

Oak Park Avenue is considered Tinley Park’s downtown scene. There, colorful benches are decorated by local artists and displayed from May through October as part of the village’s public art program. “There’s a healthy amount of restaurants there, but my favorite is The Scoop,” Anderson points out. “They have the best homemade ice cream.” Down the street are Love’s Sweet Arrow—the second romance-only bookstore in the United States—and Banging Gavel Brews, a civic-code-themed pub with live music and a German-style beer garden. Alternatively, locals rave about Soundgrowler Brewing. Located on 183rd Street, the music-themed brewery hosts vinyl nights paired with a taco window serving Mexican street food. As for the essentials, homebuyers will find a Jewel-Osco less than a mile west on Harlem Avenue. There’s also a Sam’s Club, ALDI, Meijer and Menards at the intersection of 159th and Harlem, a couple of miles north.

Live music and fresh produce at Zabrocki Plaza

Zabrocki Plaza on Oak Park Avenue is an open-air space that plays host to several of Tinley Park’s annual events. The warmer months usher in an Art and Garden Market, as well as a Saturday farmer’s market held from June to October. “We have Music in the Plaza every week when the weather is nice,” Hogan adds. “It brings a lot of people out. They always take their lawn chairs and coolers.” Residents can also gather at the plaza for the Irish Parade, held each year along the Oak Park Avenue strip. Large-scale events are often held at the Tinley Park Convention Center and Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre, a music venue booking globally renowned artists. “You have to watch for traffic when it comes to the Amphitheatre, but it’s usually avoidable,” Hogan continues. “Definitely check if there’s a concert going on when you’re traveling so you can avoid Harlem Avenue.”
