Rural Neighborhood in Connecticut
Tolland County 06084
Tolland residents may have been lured by the town’s quietness, but they are equally appreciative of its proximity to other areas.
“It’s a pretty quiet New England town,” says Mark Riesbeck, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, New England Properties. “But it’s close to the University of Connecticut and 20 minutes from Hartford. A lot of people commute to the city for work.”
With three exits off Interstate 84, it’s easy to access other areas in and around Connecticut, and it’s convenient for visitors to stop in for one of Tolland’s annual events like the Tolland Green Scarecrow Contest in the fall or the Holiday Tree Lighting.
“People vote for their favorite scarecrow displays in the fall and at Christmas, Santa travels through the entire town on a firetruck,” says Riesbeck.
Many of the roads in town, like Buff Cap Road, are winding, two-lane thoroughfares with 1970s ranch-style homes priced at $325,000 and shaded, tree-lined roads like Crystal Lake Road that feature Cape Cods in need of a few repairs listed for under $200,000. You will also see newly constructed townhouses on Belvedere Drive for around $400,000 and well-maintained ranch houses from the 1960s on impeccably kept lawns.
“A lot of the houses here have acreage,” says Riesbeck. “There’s a lot of space in Tolland.”
Tolland Public Schools, a district that includes a primary, intermediate, middle and high school, has a good reputation in the community. A lot of residents come out in the evening and on weekends to support the school’s sports teams.
“It’s an engaged and active town,” Riesbeck says.
Folks get exercise by hiking the area trails off Cider Mill Road and exploring some of the conservation areas.
“Shenipsit Lake is another popular spot,” says Riesbeck. “A lot of people water ski there.”
Tolland is home to a few independent businesses like Kollas Orchard on New Road, an apple orchard where you can bag your own Honey Crisp and Yellow Delicious Apples and shop for ciders and frozen pies.
“Town people go to The Country Butcher at Spring Meadow Farm a lot,” Riesbeck says.
The Country Butcher is owned by Stephen Boyer, a Connecticut native and expert in farm-to-table meat production.
On the evenings when preparing dinner is not an option, pick up a specialty pizza from Camille’s Wood Fired Pizza in the back of the Big Y Plaza or stop by The Spot Bar & Grill for a wrap or burger.
If you’re looking for something to do, it’s not too hard to find a local event in the town green, and the Arts of Tolland Craft Show is held each September, rain or shine. But if you’re looking for a quieter life in the New England countryside, Tolland might be the place for you.
