Various single-family homes with sloped yards
In Quinton Heights, houses come in all shapes and sizes, with bungalows, ranch styles, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals from the 1930s to '60s being the most common. Bungalows typically range from 500 to 1,000 square feet, selling for around $75,000 to $125,000. The other housing styles can range anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 square feet, selling for $125,000 to $250,000. Not all, but many homes are situated on sloped, quarter-acre yards with lots of surrounding trees in the front and backyard.Topeka's destination for sledding
Locals enjoy the outdoors at Shunga Glen Park. The 13-mile Shunga Trail runs through the west side of the park, attaching to a large connection of other trails in Shawnee County along the Shunganunga Creek. It's also home to Rip-On Skate Park, one of three skate parks in Topeka, offering a large bowl and other ramps. A bridge crosses over the creek to the east side of the park, where there's a basketball court and playground. The entire park is also set up as an 18-hole disc golf course. The Quinton Heights Sledding Hill is located on Southwest 24th Street. "If there's one place for sledding, that's the place," says Patrick Habiger, a lifelong resident of Topeka and Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. "We probably get two to five snows a year, and it's the perfect spot. It gets pretty crowded, so you have to be careful. When I was a kid, I got knocked out by a runaway sled." As a bonus to the winter fun, the top of the hill also offers a view of downtown Topeka in the distance.Topeka Public Schools and Washburn University
Students attend Jardine Elementary School, which gets a C-plus grade from Niche and is about 2 miles south of the neighborhood. Jardine Middle School is part of the same building and earns a B-minus grade. Topeka High School is about 2 miles north, closer to downtown, and earns a B grade while being ranked the fourth-most diverse high school in the state. Built in 1931, Topeka High is well known for its elaborate Gothic-style architecture with a 165-foot bell tower inspired by Henry VIII's Great Hall at Hampton Court Palace. Students can continue their education at Washburn University just down the street. The public university offers more than 200 academic programs and competes in NCAA Division II sports. It also puts on several performing arts productions throughout the year, while the Topeka Symphony Orchestra utilizes the university's White Concert Hall for monthly performances as well.A 2.5-mile drive to downtown
Topeka Metro operates public buses along Southwest 21st Street. To get downtown, it's about a 2.5-mile drive north with about three traffic lights along the way. Downtown offers the closest access to Interstate 70, which can be taken about 65 miles east to Kansas City. Topeka Regional Airport is about 7 miles south. However, there are no commercial flights. Flyers will have to travel 75 miles to Kansas City International Airport instead.A few local businesses on 21st Street
Quinton Heights has a few restaurants along 21st Street, the main road on the neighborhood's north side. World Cup Coffee and Crepes offers indoor and outdoor dining, where locals can enjoy a latte and choose from a variety of breakfast, lunch and dessert crepes. Tortilla Jack's provides an old-fashioned Mexican atmosphere while serving tacos, burritos and other traditional Mexican food. Meanwhile, Ichabods Grill is the place to go to hang out with friends while watching sports over burgers, wings and drinks. Locals can head to Washburn View Antique Mall to shop for unique treasures from different vendors. Waters Hardware is right next door. There are also dozens of big box retailers like Walmart, Target and Sam's Club about 4 miles west. They're all right by the two-story West Ridge Mall, which has more than 50 businesses. Along with retailers and restaurants, the mall is home to a Sky Zone Trampoline Park, a Game Zone arcade and an indoor glow-in-the-dark mini golf course.
