Industrial history and waves of immigration in Chambersburg
The facades of 19th- and 20th-century factories and row houses line the blocks of Chambersburg, painting a picture of Trenton’s industrial past. Formerly Trenton’s Little Italy, and affectionately called the Burg, Chambersburg is now home to many Latin American businesses and cultural events that draw the whole community. “Chambersburg is a bastion of immigration,” says Trenton’s mayor, Reed Gusciora. “It shows in the Guatemalan and Ecuadorian business associations, the yearly Guatemalan parade. You’re also getting great value on beautiful historic homes within a vibrant community without paying New York City or Philadelphia prices.” Doubling as Trenton’s restaurant district, locals and food tourists alike follow red signs to some of the capital city’s most popular sources of global cuisines. Positioned on regional and interstate transit routes, Chambersburg combines a strong local identity with straightforward commutability to larger urban hubs from Philadelphia to New York City.
The Chambersburg neighborhood has several retail options in the area.
Global cuisines in Trenton’s restaurant district
Globe-spanning cuisines are on offer at Chambersburg’s many restaurants, though flavors from across Latin America are especially well-represented. Fixtures on the red street signs directing pedestrians through Trenton’s restaurant district, La Terraza, Pura Vida, and Sabor Latino are favorites for Guatemalan, Costa Rican, and Dominican and Mexican fare respectively. The Blue Danube serves authentic Eastern European staples, and the Italian Peoples Bakery has been a Trenton staple since 1936, known for fresh bread, baked goods and hoagies.
Shoppers head to the wire-factory-turned-strip-mall, Roebling Market, for Food Bazaar and a handful of smaller businesses. Specialty convenience stores like Reyes Super Market & Deli also pop up on corners throughout Chambersburg. Several houses of worship, including the historic neo-Gothic Immaculate Conception Church which has stood since the 1880s, hold services in Spanish and English.
Taste Trenton and Latino heritage celebrations
Taste Trenton has invited foodies to explore Chambersburg’s dining scene over two days for a decade but it has expanded expanded the event to the 10 Crucial Days of Dining in September 2024, giving food tourists more time to sample signature dishes at participating restaurants. For a weekend during the same month, the Guatemalan Merchants Association decks out Unity Square Park in azul y blanco and brings together musical acts, food vendors, parade marchers and dancers at the annual Guatemalan Parade and Festival. Rounding out Hispanic Heritage Month, the Boys & Girls Club of Mercer County puts on a Hispanic-Latino Heritage Celebration block party just west of Chambersburg.
Commuting on South Broad Street and trains to Philly
Commuters to local businesses or to the nearby St. Francis Medical Center may choose to walk a handful of blocks to work. South Broad Street provides an under-1-mile route into downtown Trenton for those commuting by car or New Jersey Transit buses. Hamilton Avenue Light Rail Station is just west of Chambersburg, providing interstate commuters a 30- to 45-minute train ride into Philadelphia. Taking Interstate 95, Philadelphia is 34 miles away and New York City is 66 miles away.
Blocks of historic attached homes in Chambersburg
Residential blocks are dominated by attached homes built in the styles popular throughout the mid-1800s and early 1900s. Bands of vinyl-sided twin houses point split-toned gables two stories above some streets, while red-brick Italianate row houses dominate others. Prices range from $45,000 to $280,000 depending on renovation levels. “Chambersburg is great for first-time homebuyers. You can get a single-family home for not too much money,” says Marina Echavarria, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker with nine years of experience specializing in Burlington and Mercer counties. “A lot of investors see that these properties have strong potential, too.” Homes converted into multi-family residences sell for $240,000 to $425,000. Living in apartment buildings and smaller multi-family complexes, most Chambersburg residents rent rather than own. Wide sidewalks and occasional mature trees run past front porches and street-parked cars throughout the neighborhood. Chambersburg has a CAP Index crime score of 8 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. The area scores high for vehicle theft and other violent crimes.

Green spaces at Unity Square Park and Agabati Square
Silver benches, tables and chairs invite locals to rest under shady trees at Agabati Square, a tiny pocket park at the center of the community. Boasting a playground and baseball fields surrounded by tree-shaded walking paths, Unity Square Park is often filled with the sounds of kids playing pick-up games on dusty, makeshift soccer fields. A groundbreaking ceremony in June 2024 kickstarted the city-led park redevelopment project which will provide the Burg with a near-regulation size soccer pitch and concession stand. John A. Roebling Memorial Park is 2 miles away, taking explorers down forested trails that wind past marshes and a lake dotted with kayakers.
